LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Monita Buchwald upon the occasion of
her designation by the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty as the
recipient of the Chesed Award at its 34th Annual Legislative Breakfast
on June 13, 2010

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that organizations and
individuals who devote their purposeful endeavors to improving the qual-
ity of life for others strengthen the fabric of the community of the
City and State of New York and merit the highest commendation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Monita Buchwald upon the occasion of her designation by the Metropolitan
Council on Jewish Poverty as the recipient of the Chesed Award at its
34th Annual Legislative Breakfast, to be held at New York City's Roose-
velt Hotel on Sunday, June 13, 2010; and
WHEREAS, The Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, known throughout
New York City as the Met Council, is dedicated to the alleviation of
social, economic, housing and related problems of the Jewish poor, work-
ing poor, elderly and recent immigrants in the New York City area; and
WHEREAS, An affiliated agency of the UJA-Federation of New York, the
Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty is a not-for-profit organization
representing and coordinating the efforts of grassroots Jewish Community
Councils citywide and national Jewish organizations; and
WHEREAS, As the Council's directors, officers, staff and supporters
gather at the agency's 34th Annual Legislative Breakfast on June 13,
2010 to renew their commitment to the timely and effective delivery of
needed services, the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty will proudly
honor community leaders who have contributed significantly to the furth-
erance of its mission; and
WHEREAS, Monita Buchwald, founding member of the Met Council Food for
Life Committee, and recipient of the Met Council's 2010 Chesed Award,
truly merits such recognition; and
WHEREAS, A former public relations executive, Monita Buchwald made the
leap from the boardroom to the kitchen and is currently the recipe test-
er for MARTHA STEWART LIVING magazine, a position she has held since
2003; and
WHEREAS, Prior to her culinary career, Monita Buchwald was Vice Chair-
man of the Manning Selvage and Lee public relations agency, during which
time she represented many Fortune 500 companies including Nestle, Nabis-
co, General Foods, and Procter and Gamble; and
WHEREAS, Monita Buchwald is a devoted member of Congregation Kehilath
Jeshurun, where she serves as Vice President of the Sisterhood; she
continues to be an involved member of Met Council's Food For Life
committee, which she helped establish; she played an active role in the
recent March 11th Food For Life Event and has also been a volunteer for
City Harvest and the Central Synagogue Breakfast Program; and
WHEREAS, With Monita Buchwald throughout have been her husband,
Charles Edelsburg, and their children Sarah and Natan, all of whom are
proud to be part of her life and rejoice in her many accomplishments;
and
WHEREAS, Individuals, such as Monita Buchwald, who distinguish them-
selves in their profession and in service to their community, working
diligently to improve the quality of life of others, merit the recogni-
tion and appreciation of this Legislative Body on behalf of those who
have benefited from their worthy endeavors and of all the people of the
City and State of New York; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Monita Buchwald upon the occasion of her designation by the
Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty as the recipient of the Chesed
Award at its 34th Annual Legislative Breakfast on June 13, 2010; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Monita Buchwald.
