LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of L. William Eagan, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, L. William "Bill" Eagan of Cazenovia, New York, died on
Sunday, May 16, 2010, at the age of 92; and
WHEREAS, Bill Eagan was born on May 6, 1918, to Leo T. Eagan and Elea-
nor Demong Eagan; he graduated from Georgetown University in 1941 and
was honorably discharged from the United States Army after serving in
the South Pacific during World War II; as the son of one of the founders
of Eagan Real Estate, his vision created the shopping center arm of the
business, with Shoppingtown being the first shopping center in the state
and the second in the country; and
WHEREAS, Bill Eagan's vision also created Fairmount Fair, which was
the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States, Penn Can Mall,
Marine Towers and the Agway building in DeWitt among others; he was one
of the founding members of the International Council of Shopping
Centers; and
WHEREAS, As an avid hunter and conservationist, one of Bill Eagan's
most proud accomplishments was to be a founding member and past presi-
dent of the Wildfowler's Association and the Central New York Grouse
Society; his passion for golf was evident in his lifelong membership in
the Onondaga Golf and Country Club, the Cavaliers, Three Score and Ten,
and the New York State Seniors; and
WHEREAS, Bill Eagan was also the past captain and international team
leader for the American Senior Golf Association, served as president of
the Eastern Seniors Golf Association and was on the board of the Ameri-
can Seniors; he was a member of the Gyro Club, the Rotary Club and the
Cazenovia Club; and
WHEREAS, Bill Eagan distinguished himself in his profession and by his
sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of his
community; and
WHEREAS, Bill Eagan's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Bill Eagan is survived by his bride and dancing partner of
almost 60 years, Doris, his children, Kathy, Tim, Edward, and Annie, his
sister, Eleanor, as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and
friends; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Bill Eagan leaves behind a
legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a
comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of L. William Eagan, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of L. William Eagan.
