LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Alice Kerns upon the occasion of
celebrating her 100th Birthday

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and cele-
brate the proud and distinguished individuals who are residents of this
great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Alice Kerns, who was born on June 2, 1910, celebrated her
100th Birthday on June 2, 2010; she was born on the Town Line Road of
Fluvanna, New York; and
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Alice Kerns upon the occasion of celebrating her 100th Birthday on
June 2, 2010; and
WHEREAS, In her childhood, Alice Kerns lived with her parents and
seven siblings on a farm on the Mayville-Sherman Road in Sherman, New
York; she was educated at the Sherman village school, then went on for
teacher's training school in Sherman after high school; and
WHEREAS, This devoted family woman married Albert Kerns; they lived in
Cattaraugus, New York, then relocated to Clymer; together, they raised
one child, a daughter named Lynda; and
WHEREAS, Alice Kerns worked first at the side of her mother in the
family's home and garden, then as secretary of Oatka Vault Service and
later as the town librarian in Clymer; and
WHEREAS, This religious woman regularly attended and taught Sunday
School at the Clymer Methodist Church; she was always a devoted member
and very active in the church family, serving on committees and helping
with projects; in 2001, she was named "Woman of the Year" by her church,
and was also honored at the Cornerstone District of the United Methodist
Church's Laity Banquet for her contributions to her congregation; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated community member, Alice Kerns was a member of the
American Legion Auxiliary and the Twentieth Century Club; she also took
on a number of knitting students; most of the sweaters, afghans,
mittens, scarves and dish cloths she knitted were generously given to
others; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and incredible
achievements of this country during the last century; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Alice Kerns upon the occasion of celebrating her 100th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Alice Kerns.
