LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION paying tribute to the New York State Council on
the Arts (NYSCA) for its many years of public service and support for
the arts organizations throughout the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to call attention to
individuals and organizations that devote their time and energies to the
cultural enrichment of the Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to pay trib-
ute to the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) for its many years
of public service and support for the arts organizations throughout the
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Founded by Governor Nelson D. Rockefeller in 1960, this year
marks the Golden Anniversary of the NYSCA; and
WHEREAS, NYSCA has successfully established itself as the first modern
day arts council in the country, acting as a template for the establish-
ment of the National Endowment for the Arts as well as other arts agen-
cies throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, From its earliest days, NYSCA has opened the eyes of count-
less New Yorkers to the diverse and ever-changing artistic culture of
this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, As a fiscal supporter of the arts, NYSCA has provided the
funding necessary to maintain and expand the many arts programs and
institutions that New York State has developed over the past half centu-
ry, while keeping the decision-making aspect of the distribution of
funds at the will of local arts councils; and
WHEREAS, The programs and funding provided through NYSCA are a vital
component in the promotion of New York State tourism; tourism is a
significant driver in increasing state revenue each year; and
WHEREAS, By observing this auspicious milestone, there will be a
greater awareness and appreciation for the arts and cultural sector as
well as continued encouragement of tourism throughout all of New York
State; and
WHEREAS, NYSCA has acted as a principal catalyst for the promotion of
the arts and as a result, New York State will benefit from the good
works and dedication of this illustrious organization; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to pay
tribute to the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) for its many
years of public service and support for the arts organizations through-
out the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the New York State Council on the Arts.
