LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Magnolia Tree Earth Center of
Bedford-Stuyvesant, Inc., upon the occasion of its Annual Hattie Carthan
Founder's Day Garden Party, to be held on June 26, 2010

WHEREAS, Organizations which serve the interests of the people of the
Empire State merit the commendation of this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the Magnolia
Tree Earth Center of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Inc. upon the occasion of its
Annual Hattie Carthan Founder's Day Garden Party, to be held at the
Center on Saturday, June 26, 2010; and
WHEREAS, On that day, the Magnolia Tree Earth Center of Bedford-Stuy-
vesant, Inc. will proudly present 10 Hattie Carthan Founder's Day
Awards; the event will open with a conversation with Hattie's Angels,
led by Board member Nancy Wolf and longtime community advocates Alma
Carroll, Vernell Albury and Elsie Richardson; noted perfumer Rodney
Fitzgerald Hughes will preview his long anticipated "Magnolia Grandiflo-
ra" fragrance; and
WHEREAS, The 10 award recipients include: Kristina Beecher, Princi-
pal, Bedford Village School/PS 3; Carlton Brown, COO, and Walter
Edwards, CEO, Full Spectrum New York; Pamela E. Green, Executive Direc-
tor, Weeksville Heritage Center; Sydney Katz, owner, SuperFoodtown;
Commissioner Liam Kavanaugh, First Deputy Commissioner, New York City
Parks & Recreation; David McMaster, Vice President, Bartlett Tree Expert
Company; Akima Price, Chief of Education and Programs of the New York
Restoration Project (NYRP); Dr. Vicente Sanchez, U.S.D.A. Forest Service
and Environmental Educator, City Parks Foundation; and Antonia Yuille-
Williams, Director of Public Affairs, Con Edison; and
WHEREAS, The Magnolia Tree Earth Center of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Inc. is
a New York City Landmark institution listed on the National Register of
Historic Places; and
WHEREAS, Chartered in 1972 through the work of Founder Hattie Carthan,
the Center's purpose is to contribute to the development of skills and
attitudes which foster urban beautification and environmental awareness,
and assist in the enrichment of human potential among Bedford-Stuyvesant
residents of all ages; the Center's programs and services advance know-
ledge of ecological science, cultural arts and community development; it
also promotes environmental advocacy and leadership skills; and
WHEREAS, The Magnolia Tree Earth Center's programs are many and varied
and serve a wide range of neighborhood age groups from school-age chil-
dren to older citizens; and
WHEREAS, For children ages 8 to 15, the Magnolia Tree Earth Center
offers workshops, classes and exhibitions in Ecology, Horticulture,
Science, Biology and Art; and for young adults, ages 16 to 21, the Urban
Tree Program is available, which focuses on community service in tree
care, landscaping, and gardening is offered; and
WHEREAS, The Magnolia Tree Earth Center has been a pioneer in the
creation of youth programs which strengthen community service values;
and
WHEREAS, This occasion presents an opportunity for this Legislative
Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Magnolia Tree Earth Center; and
WHEREAS, In so effectively carrying out its mission, the Magnolia Tree
Earth Center has demonstrated the value of community service; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Magnolia Tree Earth Center of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Inc., upon
the occasion of its Annual Hattie Carthan Founder's Day Garden Party, to
be held on June 26, 2010; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Magnolia Tree Earth Center of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Inc.,
677 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11216.
