LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Joan Smith upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award by the Greater
Greene Chamber of Commerce

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those illus-
trious individuals and institutions of the State of New York whose
purposeful endeavors serve to enhance the quality of life in their
communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor
Joan Smith upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
Citizen of the Year Award by the Greater Greene Chamber of Commerce, to
be celebrated on Saturday, May 2, 2009, in Greene, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Board of Directors of the Greater Greene Chamber of
Commerce are proud to recognize Joan Smith for her many years of contin-
ued community service; members and friends of the First Congregational
Church of Greene nominated Joan Smith for this prestigious award; and
WHEREAS, Joan Smith has led the music program at the First Congrega-
tional Church of Greene for many years, as Youth and Adult Choir Direc-
tors, as an Organist and as a performer; her love of church music has
extended into the community with her involvement in many joint music
programs; and
WHEREAS, Being a member of the music community of Greene, Joan Smith
accompanied the Raymond Chorus for its years of existence during the
1970s; she has spent 45 years teaching piano lessons to approximately
500 students; and
WHEREAS, Joan Smith has participated in the Greene Performing Arts
Forum for over 15 years as an accompanist, soloist coach, chorus direc-
tor, or musical director on numerous performances; she volunteers with
three projects in Greene; and
WHEREAS, A founding member of Meals on Wheels, since 1987 she has been
a volunteer with Christian Caring Service (CCS), a volunteer group that
assists individuals with transportation for medical appointments; in
addition, she volunteers with the Greene Open Door Soup Kitchen; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, it is appropriate to publicly proclaim and commend those individ-
uals for the edification and emulation of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Joan Smith upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Citizen of the Year Award by the Greater Greene Chamber of Commerce;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Joan Smith.
