LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Cantor Leslie Friedlander of Riverdale
Temple upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition on
June 21, 2009

WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in the Empire State is great-
ly enriched by the faithful and generous service of those who devote
themselves to endeavors of family, faith and community; and
WHEREAS, Cantor Leslie Friedlander will be honored at Riverdale
Temple's Annual Student Scholarship breakfast, to be held on Sunday,
June 21, 2009, at Riverdale Temple in the Bronx, New York; and
WHEREAS, Assuming a variety of roles in the life of Riverdale Temple,
Cantor Leslie Friedlander is the Director of the Religious School,
prepares the children for becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and prepares Torah
and Haftarah readers for High Holy Day services; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Cantor Leslie Friedlander is the Music Director
for the congregation; she oversees the musical interpretation and reper-
toire for professional quartets and guest musicians; she also directs
the Adult Volunteer and Junior Choirs; and
WHEREAS, The Sh'lichat Tzibur, messenger of the congregation, Cantor
Leslie Friedlander, along with the Rabbi, leads the congregation in
prayer; she also officiates at life-cycle events; and
WHEREAS, A cum laude graduate of Washington University in St. Louis
where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and biology, Cantor
Leslie Friedlander also holds a Master's degree in voice from the New
England Conservatory of Music in Boston; and
WHEREAS, Cantor Leslie Friedlander was ordained by the Academy for
Jewish Religion in 1993, has served on the Academy faculty and its Board
of Directors, and is presently the President of its alumni association;
and
WHEREAS, Following her ordination, Cantor Leslie Friedlander served as
cantor of Temple Emanuel in New Hyde Park, New York, until beginning her
tenure with Riverdale Temple in 1999; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of the Distinguished Leadership in the Communi-
ty Award presented in celebration of Women's History Month by the Comp-
troller of the City of New York, Cantor Leslie Friedlander sang profes-
sionally for a variety of prestigious artistic companies in the United
States and abroad; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when a person
of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our attention, it
is appropriate to publicly and jubilantly proclaim and commend that
individual for the edification of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Cantor Leslie Friedlander of Riverdale Temple upon the occasion
of her designation for special recognition; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Cantor Leslie Friedlander of Riverdale Temple.
