LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Retired United States Army Brigadier
General Luciano C. Salamone upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those individuals within the Empire State who have made
strong contributions to their communities and who inspire others through
their model citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Retired United States Army Brigadier General Luciano C. Salamone upon
the occasion of his designation for special recognition, to be cele-
brated at his 80th birthday party on Friday, April 8, 2011; and
WHEREAS, A native of Brooklyn, New York, Luciano Salamone grew up
during the Great Depression in a first generation Italian-American fami-
ly of 12 children; he is affectionately known as "Leo" and "Sal"; and
WHEREAS, With fond memories of his older brother, Sylvester, Luciano
Salamone became interested in the military and joined the Reserve Offi-
cers' Training Corps while attending City College; and
WHEREAS, While taking a hiatus from City College, Luciano Salamone
enlisted in the United States Army in 1951; he passed a series of tests
for a Secretary of the Army appointment to the United States Military
Academy at West Point, graduating in 1956 with many distinguished class-
mates including Norm Schwarzkopf; after Infantry School and Parachute
Training, he served in the 3rd and 4th Divisions, as well as the 82nd
Airborne; and
WHEREAS, Luciano Salamone served two one-year tours in Vietnam in 1962
and 1968; in 1962, he was the US Army advisor to a Civil Guard Battalion
in Camau, An Xuyen Province, conducting small unit operations in order
to combat insurgency; he also offered training, logistical and tactical
support to a civil guard battalion in South Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, In 1968, Luciano Salamone returned to Vietnam as a Major,
Executive Officer, in the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 4th Division at
Camp Enari, Vietnam; his battalion fought valiantly to stop the flow of
North Vietnamese troops and logistical supplies infiltrating into South
Vietnam along the Ho Chi Minh Trail; and
WHEREAS, One day while on patrol, Luciano Salamone had commanded a two
rifle company task force in Cu Don Valley which had inadvertently walked
into a well designed enemy ambush; he soon assisted the Company Comman-
der who was overwhelmed and helped to guide many troops out of the kill-
ing zone; if it were not for Luciano Salamone's bravery in such a situ-
ation, the number of casualties would have been much greater; and
WHEREAS, Luciano Salamone's heroic actions earned him the Silver Star
and the Vietnamese Gold Cross of Gallantry; after the Vietnam War, he
was steadily promoted throughout his military service, and retired as a
Colonel in 1983; and
WHEREAS, Luciano Salamone later accepted an appointment in the Office
of the Division of Military and Naval Affairs; he served as Director of
Emergency Management of New York City, Nassau and Suffolk communities;
and
WHEREAS, At age 62, Luciano Salamone retired from New York State;
while retired, his military accomplishments were once again recognized
as he was promoted to Brigadier General in the New York State Reserves;
and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his wife, Luciano Salamone is a true hero,
father, uncle and friend who is admired by many who feel privileged to
be a part of his life and rejoice in his numerous achievements; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Retired United States Army Brigadier General Luciano C. Salamone
upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Retired United States Army Brigadier General Luciano C.
Salamone.
