LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Andrew Zhu upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Student Volunteer of the Year Award by
Reaching-Out Community Services on April 28, 2011

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role
models for their peers; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Andrew Zhu upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Student Volunteer of the Year Award by Reaching-Out Community Services
to be celebrated at its Annual Dinner and Gala at Rex Manor in Brooklyn,
New York, on Thursday, April 28, 2011; and
WHEREAS, A young man of singular distinction, Andrew Zhu has contin-
ually demonstrated extreme competence, extraordinary intelligence and
diligent leadership in his unwavering service to his community and to
his school and consequently has been designated for this most presti-
gious award; and
WHEREAS, Andrew Zhu has volunteered at Reaching-Out Community Services
for the past year and a half; he has fulfilled his school's requirement
of 50 hours of community service and has continued to generously volun-
teer his time to the organization; and
WHEREAS, A junior student at New Utrecht High School, Andrew Zhu came
to the United States from China in 2000 at the age of six; he has shared
his story of facing many adversities while growing up in the United
States, but has since realized hardships make us stronger; and
WHEREAS, Andrew Zhu demonstrates all the qualities of a fine young man
who is strongly dedicated to the fight against hunger and is passionate
about helping those in his community who are less fortunate; he has
brought with him the simple teachings of his culture on the opposite
side of the world, which includes the notion that we are here on earth,
for the good of all mankind; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the occurrence of such a compassionate blend-
ing of strength, intellect and commitment as that demonstrated by Andrew
Zhu; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Andrew Zhu upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Student Volunteer of the Year Award by Reaching-Out Community
Services on April 28, 2011; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Andrew Zhu.
