LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Andrew J. Kolodny, M.D., upon the occa-
sion of his designation for special recognition by Brooklyn Housing and
Family Services at its Awards Dinner on June 16, 2011

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community and their profession; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Andrew J.
Kolodny, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Maimonides
Medical Center, upon the occasion of his designation for special recog-
nition by Brooklyn Housing and Family Services to be celebrated at its
Awards Dinner on Thursday, June 16, 2011, at Brooklyn's Rex Manor; and
WHEREAS, Andrew J. Kolodny joined the Maimonides Medical Center
Department of Psychiatry in December of 2005, as the Vice Chair for
Clinical Services; in January of 2009, he was promoted to Chairman of
the Department; and
WHEREAS, Andrew J. Kolodny believes that caring for patients with
mental illnesses and substance use disorders includes a responsibility
to advocate on their behalf; with a longstanding interest in public
health and community psychiatry, he was previously the Medical Director
for Special Projects in the Office of the Executive Deputy Commissioner
for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; and
WHEREAS, Andrew J. Kolodny was instrumental in developing and imple-
menting multiple programs to improve the health of New Yorkers as well
as save lives, some of which include citywide buprenorphine programs,
emergency room-based screening, and referral programs for drug and alco-
hol misuse; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Andrew J. Kolodny has authored publications
aimed at improving the ability of primary care physicians to recognize
and treat depression and substance use disorders and has helped train
hundreds of clinicians about buprenorphine treatment of opioid depend-
ence; and
WHEREAS, Currently, Andrew J. Kolodny is on the Board of Governors of
the Physicians' Reciprocal Insurers, New York State's second largest
medical malpractice insurer; he is a former President of the American
Association of Psychiatric Administrators New York Regional Chapter and
former Chairman of the American Psychiatric Association New York County
District Branch Public Psychiatry Committee; in addition, he is a past
recipient of the Daniel X. Freedman Congressional Health Policy Award;
and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession merit the highest commendation and the recognition and appre-
ciation of those who have benefited from their service; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Andrew J. Kolodny, M.D., upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by Brooklyn Housing and Family Services at its
Awards Dinner on June 16, 2011; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Andrew J. Kolodny, M.D.
