LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Michael A. Allegretti upon the occa-
sion of his designation by the Italian Board of Guardians as the recipi-
ent of its IBG Public Service Award on May 11, 2011

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of organizations
and individuals who distinguish themselves in their profession and in
service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Michael A. Allegretti, Director of the Center for State and Local Lead-
ership at the Manhattan Institute, upon the occasion of his designation
by the Italian Board of Guardians (IBG) as the recipient of its 2011 IBG
Public Service Award; and
WHEREAS, The Italian Board of Guardians is a non-profit social
services agency; an affiliate of Catholic Charities (Diocese of Brooklyn
and Queens), and a member agency of United Way of New York City and of
the Human Services Council, it was founded in 1936 to address the
emotional, educational, and social needs of the Italian-American commu-
nity; and
WHEREAS, Each year IBG gratefully acknowledges those who support and
work on behalf of its worthy endeavors; Michael A. Allegretti will be
honored at the Italian Board of Guardians' Annual Bishops Gala and 75th
Diamond Jubilee Celebration, to be held at Russo's on the Bay in Howard
Beach, New York on Wednesday evening, May 11, 2011; and
WHEREAS, A man of singular distinction, Michael Allegretti has contin-
ually demonstrated extreme competence, extraordinary intelligence and
diligent leadership in his unwavering service to both his community and
his profession; and
WHEREAS, Michael Allegretti holds a master's degree in Public Policy
from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, a Bachelor of
Arts degree in History from Boston College, and a Diploma in Interna-
tional Relations from Sciences Po in France; for more than a decade he
has been committed to working to fix some of the most complex problems
facing business and government; and
WHEREAS, He is currently serving as the Director of the Center for
State and Local Leadership at the Manhattan Institute, one of the
nation's preeminent policy research centers dedicated to developing and
disseminating new ideas which foster greater economic choice and indi-
vidual responsibility; in this role, he works to develop and promote a
new generation of policy reforms for state and city governments, includ-
ing ideas to address the serious budget and public finance crises
currently gripping governments across the nation; and
WHEREAS, Previously, Michael Allegretti served as Senior Advisor for
US Policy at The Climate Group, an international organization dedicated
to addressing the world's climate crisis; in this capacity, he advised
former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, managed relationships with
dozens of city and state governments around the world, and developed
comprehensive partnerships between Fortune 500 companies and govern-
ments; and
WHEREAS, Prior to joining the staff of The Climate Group, Michael
Allegretti was Director of Climate Initiatives at the Partnership for
New York City, where he organized the historic May 2007 C40 Large Cities
Climate Summit, a gathering of mayors and business leaders from the
world's largest cities and corporations committed to addressing global
climate change; and

WHEREAS, Before he began working in the public policy arena, Michael
A. Allegretti was a professional consultant with a wide range of
clients in the New York Metropolitan area; at various points in his
career, he also provided strategic counsel to clients in the non-profit
sector, including the World Economic Forum, the Tanenbaum Center for
Interreligious Understanding, and the Presidential Forum on Renewable
Energy; and
WHEREAS, Michael Allegretti's experience in the private sector began
on Wall Street as UBS Paine Webber's Public Policy Analyst; it has,
however been through his family's small business, Bayside Fuel Oil Depot
Corp, that he has learned the most about the realities of business in
America; and
WHEREAS, He understands the needs of both business and government, an
understanding which has been critical to his consulting work, his public
policy work, and most recently, his candidacy for the United States
Congress, an understanding which was recognized in 2009 when he was
inducted into the prestigious British American Project, a transatlantic,
government-sponsored fellowship of business and government leaders; and
WHEREAS, Despite his busy professional life, Michael A. Allegretti has
been called upon to contribute his time and talents to countless civic,
political and charitable endeavors and has always given of himself
unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Michael Allegretti's commitment to his community is as deep
as is his commitment to his profession; he has served as a member of the
Advisory Committee of the Guild for Exceptional Children and as a member
of the Development Committee of the Federation of Italian American
Organizations; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals who have distinguished themselves in their profession and have
faithfully served the needs of their community with diligence and
compassionate commitment to improving the quality and dignity of life in
the community are brought to our attention, they should be celebrated
and recognized by all the citizens of the great State of New York; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Michael A. Allegretti upon the occasion of his designation by the
Italian Board of Guardians as the recipient of its 2011 IBG Public
Service Award on May 11, 2011; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Michael A. Allegretti.
