LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Monsignor Charles J. Fahey upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of the 2011 Loretto Legacy
Award on May 20, 2011

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Monsignor Charles J. Fahey has given not only of his time and
energies but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and
consequently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Monsignor
Charles J. Fahey upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the 2011 Loretto Legacy Award at the 7th Annual Older Americans Month
Celebration Luncheon and 2011 Loretto Legacy Awards on Friday, May 20,
2011; and
WHEREAS, A priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, Monsignor
Charles J. Fahey served in parishes and Catholic Charities from 1959
until 1979 when he became the Director of Fordham University's the Third
Age Center; and
WHEREAS, Monsignor Charles J. Fahey was named the University's Marie
Ward Doty Professor of Aging Studies in 1980, and became the Center's
Senior Associate in 1992; he moved to Professor Emeritus on July 1,
2001; since 1997, he has served as a Program Officer for the Universi-
ty's Milbank Memorial Fund; and
WHEREAS, Monsignor Charles J. Fahey has been called upon to contribute
his time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Monsignor Charles J. Fahey has been active both in health and
aging activities at the local, State, National and International levels;
he was a charter member of the Federal Council on Aging, having been
appointed by Presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter; he played an active role
in the leadership of the 1971, 1981 and 1995 White House Conferences on
Aging; and
WHEREAS, Additionally, Monsignor Charles J. Fahey was a member of the
Holy See's delegation to the 1982 United Nations World Assembly on Aging
(Vienna) and of the United States delegation to the 2002 Second World
Assembly on Aging (Madrid); and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man has served on the boards of the Catholic
Health Association, the National Council on Aging, The Sisters of Mercy
Health Care System (St. Louis) and the Daughters of Charity National
Health System; he was a board member and president of the American Asso-
ciation for Homes and Services for the Aging, Catholic Charities USA and
the American Society on Aging; and
WHEREAS, Currently, Monsignor Charles J. Fahey is a member of the
National Board of the Volunteers of America, and the American Foundation
for Aging Research; he serves as a consultant on ethics to the American
Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and The American Health
Care Association; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, he serves as a member of the National Commission
for Quality Long-Term Care, he is a fellow of the Institute of Medicine
of the National Academy of Science, the Gerontological Society of Ameri-
ca, the National Academy of Social Insurance and the New York Academy of
Medicine; and
WHEREAS, A recipient of four honorary degrees, Monsignor Charles J.
Fahey was also awarded the 2011 Hall of Fame Award by the American Soci-
ety on Aging in April; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Monsignor Charles J. Fahey has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Monsignor Charles J. Fahey has
displayed throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Monsignor Charles J. Fahey upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the 2011 Loretto Legacy Award on May 20, 2011; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Monsignor Charles J. Fahey.
