LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Paul Hans upon the occasion of his
retirement after 15 years of dedicated service to the Sullivan County
District Attorney's Office

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and honor
those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote themselves to
public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence in providing
for the care and welfare of the citizens of their communities and this
great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their exem-
plary contributions and service on behalf of others; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body- is justly proud to honor
Paul Hans upon the occasion of his retirement after 15 years of dedi-
cated service to the Sullivan County District Attorney's Office; and
WHEREAS, In 1995, Paul Hans joined the Sullivan County District Attor-
ney's Office and remained in this capacity until 2011; his 26 year
career in law enforcement is both extensive and impressive; and
WHEREAS, A 1964 graduate of Burgard Vocational High School, Paul Hans
went on to attend the New York State Police Academy, from which he grad-
uated in 1970; and
WHEREAS, Upon graduating, Paul Hans became a New York State Trooper
and that same year he was a Firearms instructor, a 270 rifleman, and was
assigned to the SWAT team to provide security for Olympic athletes at
the 1980 Olympic Games at Lake Placid, New York; in addition, he
attended FBI Academy, was assigned to the New York City Emergency
Service Unit, and conducted hostage negotiations; and
WHEREAS, In 1981, Paul Hans joined the Bureau of Criminal Investi-
gations Division with the State Police in Ferndale, New York, and
remained in that capacity for the next seven years; during which time he
investigated a full range of crimes from forgeries to homicides; in
addition, he participated in seminars in both child abuse and homicide,
as well as attended arson cause and determination school; and
WHEREAS, From 1985 to 1995, Paul Hans worked with the Narcotics Unit
with the State Police in Middletown, New York; during which time he
attended New York State Police basic narcotic school, and in service
narcotic school at New York State Police Academy; he also attended two
Drug Enforcement Agency seminars and training in sophisticated electron-
ic surveillance equipment; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure with the Narcotics Unit, Paul Hans' duties
included working undercover as well as supervising other members of
narcotic unit during undercover investigations; he was responsible for
the setup and use of sophisticated surveillance equipment including wire
taps, video equipment, body wire transmitters and receivers; and
WHEREAS, Paul Hans has been called to testify before the grand jury as
well as in the county court, and has worked with local police depart-
ments in Sullivan, Orange, Ulster, Rockland and, Greene Counties; and
WHEREAS, Paul Hans has been the recipient of numerous Superintendent's
Commendations and Troop Commanders Commendations as well as letters of
appreciation from the District Attorney's Office and local police
departments; and
WHEREAS, A member of several organizations including Benevolent and
Protective Order of Elks Liberty Lodge and the New York State Police
Investigators Association, Paul Hans also spent six years with the Army
Reserves; and

WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Donna, who feels
privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those dedicated
public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the preservation
of order and the protection of others are worthy and due full praise for
their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Paul Hans upon the occasion of his retirement after 15 years of
dedicated service to the Sullivan County District Attorney's Office; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Paul Hans, 23 Cornelia Lane, Grahamsville, NY 12740.
