LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Louis Sykes upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Louis Sykes upon the occasion of his designation for special recogni-
tion, to be celebrated at the 4th Annual Men of Distinction Awards Cere-
mony, on Thursday, June 9, 2011, in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Louis Sykes was born on July 25, 1957 in Brooklyn, New York,
to Laura and James Sykes and is the fifth sibling of ten brothers and
sisters; he was raised in Brooklyn and grew up in a New York City Hous-
ing Authority (NYCHA) housing development known as the "Ingersoll Hous-
es" and attended P.S. 67, JHS 265 and Food and Maritime High School; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, Louis Sykes was promoted to Supervisor of Caretakers
and assigned to the Van Dyke Houses having oversight of janitorial oper-
ations, making sure that NYCHA standards were met; and
WHEREAS, Louis Sykes, who started working in the NYCHA system as an
exterminator, was promoted in 1996 to the post of Assistant Superinten-
dent of the William Reid Houses with special responsibility for heating
and maintenance; after displaying such outstanding work ethic along with
his experience, he was again promoted in 2002 to Superintendent of the
Pink Houses which included the overall responsibility of its management
and day to day operations; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, Louis Sykes continues to work with
community leaders and residents to improve the quality of their lives
and enhance the social fabric of the Brooklyn community; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Emma, and their chil-
dren, Charday and Shatory, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of
his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Louis Sykes upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Louis Sykes.
