LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Emily Siu upon the occasion of
receiving the distinguished Girl Scout Gold Award, the most prestigious
of Scouting honors

WHEREAS, Emily Siu, through her diligence and rigorous efforts, has
achieved Scouting's highest and most prestigious honor, the Girl Scout
Gold Award; she will receive the award at a Gold Award ceremony on
Saturday, June 11 2011; and
WHEREAS, Emily Siu, the daughter of Nancy Chan and Chi Ho Siu, is a
member of Girl Scouts of America Ambassador Troop 4-772, Girl Scout
Council of Greater New York, sponsored by the Conron Camp Foundation;
and
WHEREAS, America has achieved her greatest heights of glory through
the dedication, determination and tireless efforts of the outstanding
citizens of this nation; and
WHEREAS, It is only with the continued diligence and devotion of our
youth, tomorrow's leaders, that America will maintain her glory; and
WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of America and its members are dedicated to the
development of character and leadership in the youth of this nation; and
WHEREAS, Since 1980, Senior Girl Scouts have capped their years of
achievement in Girl Scouting with the Girl Scout Gold Award; and
WHEREAS, In order to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, a girl must
fulfill five requirements; chief among them is the design and completion
of a Gold Award Project; this project must build upon the interests of
the girl, provide a service to the community, and be of lasting benefit;
and
WHEREAS, For her Gold Award project, entitled Eliminate E-Waste, Emily
Siu and Carmen Shum decided to work together to, focusing on electronic
recycling, help address waste disposal in Flushing; and
WHEREAS, They began their project with the goals of collecting about
three televisions, six computers, a few pounds of batteries, and a few
other items and of educating people about the dangers of disposing elec-
tronics along with their everyday garbage; and
WHEREAS, Emily Siu and Carmen Shum decided to make three small
collection boxes for batteries and small electronics and to hold one
collection day for larger electronics; and
WHEREAS, To inform people of their upcoming collection day event, they
e-mailed Conron troop leaders asking them to promote their project among
the scouts and, with the assistance of Troop Leader Elaine Cheung and
New York City Councilmember Peter Koo, they were also able to organize a
press conference to spread the message across their community, an effort
which led to the organization of a second collection day to allow people
more time to bring in their old devices; and
WHEREAS, Though certain scheduling difficulties somewhat delayed the
project, they did benefit it in the long run by enabling Emily Siu and
Carmen Shum to also bring the education and awareness aspects of their
project into area schools; and
WHEREAS, When the final results of their highly successful collection
efforts were tallied, Emily Siu and Carmen Shum had collected 28 comput-
er monitors, 33 CPUs, 36 laptops, 53 cell phones, 46 pounds of
batteries, and many other items; and
WHEREAS, When the donations were transported to the recycling plant,
thanks to Emily Siu and Carmen Shum and the friends and members of the
community who helped them, a total of 2,772 pounds of electronics had
been safely and responsibly disposed of and recycled; and

WHEREAS, An outstanding young woman, Emily Siu has been involved in
Scouting for years, has lived up to Scouting's ideals and has attained
all of the necessary achievements for the Girl Scout Gold Award; and
WHEREAS, Emily Siu is a credit to her family, her school, her communi-
ty, her State and her nation, and no doubt her future will be filled
with accomplishments of equal importance; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations, in
recognition of the significance of this meritorious achievement, to
congratulate and honor Emily Siu upon the occasion of her designation as
recipient of the Girl Scout Gold Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Emily Siu.
