LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Adena Anderson upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition for her significant contributions to
the Manhasset School Community Association

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Adena Anderson has given not only of her time and energies
but also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Adena Anderson
upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition for her
significant contributions to the Manhasset School Community Association
(SCA); and
WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Dean," Adena Anderson has been
called upon to contribute her time and talents to countless civic and
charitable endeavors and has always given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Adena Anderson moved to Manhasset, New York, in 1941, with
her husband, Albin, and their children, Carolyn Anne and Tom; from the
time she arrived, she was an active and involved member of the communi-
ty; and
WHEREAS, Adena Anderson served as the President of the Ruth Circle of
the Lutheran Church; she was also active in Scouting with her children,
and was a Girl Scout leader as well as a member of the Board; and
WHEREAS, In 1951, as the Ways and Means Chairman of the SCA, Adena
Anderson started thinking about how to raise money for the children of
Manhasset; she asked the SCA Executive Board for permission to open a
clothing shop, designed to offer outgrown clothes of fine quality; once
her request was approved, the Turnover Shop was established; and
WHEREAS, Like the proceeds of present-day SCA fundraising activities,
the proceeds from the Turnover Shop were used to fund scholarships and
special projects for Manhasset's schools; once the Turnover Shop was up
and running, the SCA soon began receiving generous donations of beauti-
ful clothes; and
WHEREAS, The Turnover Shop eventually closed in the mid-1960s, but its
impact on the Manhasset community was immeasurable; the year following
the Turnover Shop's closing, the first SCA Fair was held, at which Turn-
over Shop-type items were sold; the Fair was such a success that it has
continued annually since then; and
WHEREAS, The Turnover Shop's significant fundraising impact was the
precursor to today's SCA Fair; the SCA Fair is the largest single
fundraising event undertaken by the SCA, and the funds raised through
the SCA Fair enable the SCA to fund a variety of programs to enrich the
education and social life of Manhasset's children; and
WHEREAS, It was Adena Anderson's initial spark of an idea, to raise
funds for Manhasset's children, that was the impetus for the SCA's
structured fundraising activities; without her dedication and vision,
the SCA Fair might never have come to pass; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Adena Anderson has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Adena Anderson has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-

tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Adena Anderson upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition for her significant contributions to the Manhasset School
Community Association; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Adena Anderson.
