LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending President and Chief Executive Officer
Julie A. Shimer, Ph. D., upon the occasion of her retirement from Welch
Allyn

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing tradition, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Julie Shimer upon the
occasion of her retirement from Welch Allyn; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Julie Shimer graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Insti-
tute with a bachelor's degree in physics and earned her master's and
doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from Lehigh University; and
WHEREAS, Prior to joining Welch Allyn, Dr. Julie Shimer served as
President and CEO of Vocera Communications, a wireless communications
company based in California; and
WHEREAS, She also held other executive positions such as Vice Presi-
dent and General Manager of networking products at 3Com Corp.,
2000-2001; Vice President and General Manager for the paging division at
Motorola, 1993-1999, as well as Vice President of its semiconductor
products section; and administrative positions at AT&T Bell Laboratories
and Bethlehem Steel Company; and
WHEREAS, In 2002, Dr. Julie Shimer joined Welch Allyn as a member of
its Board of Directors; in March of 2007, she was elected President and
CEO, becoming the first woman to hold these high offices in the 95 year
history of Welch Allyn; and
WHEREAS, During the first two years, Welch Allyn, under the luminous
direction of its new President and CEO, won Best Places to Work honors
in Ireland and Mexico; Dr. Julie Shimer also began developing an innova-
tive platform of connected devices which led to a slate of solutions
that enable healthcare professionals to access and manage patient data
in real time, ultimately allowing for more effective and efficient
patient care; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, and also within the first two years, Welch Allyn
broke ground on an extensive expansion project at its global headquar-
ters in Skaneateles Falls, New York; and
WHEREAS, Currently, Dr. Julie Shimer holds board positions with Welch
Allyn, Netgear, and CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity;
and is a member of both the Society of Women Engineers, and the Insti-
tute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers; and
WHEREAS, In March of 2011, Governor Andrew Cuomo appointed Dr. Julie
Shimer Chairwoman of Empire State Development Corp., New York's economic
development organization, becoming the first woman to serve in this
position; and
WHEREAS, In her capacity as President and CEO of Welch Allyn, Dr.
Julie Shimer served with loyalty, honor, and distinction, providing
extensive experience in the management of developing and selling of
technology products, while providing important perspectives in business
management; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her career, Dr. Julie Shimer earned the admira-
tion, esteem and affection of her colleagues, proving to be a true asset
to society; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their

profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend President and CEO Julie A. Shimer, Ph. D., upon the occasion of
her retirement from Welch Allyn; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Julie A. Shimer, Ph.D.
