LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Diana O'Neill upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the Junior League of Long Island

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Diana O'Neill has given not only of her time and energies but
also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Diana O'Neill
upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by the
Junior League of Long Island, to be celebrated at their 50th Anniversary
Gala on Friday, March 30, 2012, at the Woodbury Country Club in Wood-
bury, New York; and
WHEREAS, Born in Washington, DC, and raised in Arlington, Virginia,
Diana O'Neill received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from
Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland before pursuing
volunteerism as her second career; and
WHEREAS, Diana O'Neill worked for the United States Department of
Treasury's Financial Management Service in Washington, DC, San Francis-
co, CA, and Austin, TX, rising to Acting Regional Director of the Austin
Financial Center from her early beginnings as a systems accountant and
cash management specialist; and
WHEREAS, In June of 2001, Diana O'Neill, was named Executive Director
of the Long Island Volunteer Center, an affiliate of HandsOn Network,
and has been an integral member of the all-volunteer management staff
for the past ten years; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her tenure, Diana O'Neill has engaged in efforts
involving the recent designation as one of ten New York State Regional
Volunteer Centers, the annual Prom Boutique gown giveaway project,
cosponsor of Long Island Volunteer Enterprise, United Nations Interna-
tional Year of Volunteers 2001 outreach chair, the creation of and chair
of the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame, promotion of Points of Light
Institute National Days of Service, volunteer for clothing outreach at
the Mary Brennan Inn soup kitchen and welfare to work program of Our
Lady of Loretto Parish Social Ministry, the creation of a disaster
relief mental health alliance registry, collaborative anti-hunger initi-
ative member, and Long Island VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in
Disaster); and
WHEREAS, Diana O'Neill has been called upon to contribute her time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Diana O'Neill is a past board member of Literacy Nassau,
Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, Junior League of Long Island
and Junior League of Long Island Sustainers, Child Abuse Prevention
Services, Child Care Council of Nassau County, and Association of
Professional Volunteer Administrators; and
WHEREAS, Past president of the Junior League of Long Island, Diana
O'Neill was grounded in the foundations of nonprofit management and
community activism and received the League's 2001 Woman of Achievement
Award; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman was also selected by DISTINCTION MAGA-
ZINE as a Women of Distinction in March of 2001; in addition, she was
featured as NEWSDAY'S Part 2 cover story in June of 2001, on Telecare in
February 2002, and NETWORKING MAGAZINE'S cover story in March of 2006
for her volunteer efforts; and

WHEREAS, Diana O'Neill has been an active member in St. Joseph's
Parish, having served on the Parish Advisory Council and the boards of
Human Services and Adult Formation and Spirituality; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Diana O'Neill has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband of 30 years, Peter
O'Neill, and their son, Colin, both of whom feel privileged to be a part
of her life and rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Diana O'Neill has displayed through-
out her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Diana O'Neill upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the Junior League of Long Island; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Diana O'Neill.
