LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Michael Charles Schramm Jr. upon the
occasion of his designation as a Deputy Grand Marshal of the 37th Annual
Queens County St. Patrick's Day Parade, March 3, 2012
WHEREAS, St. Patrick's Day is a time for people of all nationalities and
generations to assemble and celebrate the rich culture and heritage of
the Irish people throughout these United States; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day Parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and highlights the many
contributions and historical accomplishments of the Irish community in
this diverse land; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Michael
Charles Schramm Jr. upon the occasion of being named a Deputy Grand
Marshal of the 37th Annual Queens County St. Patrick's Day Parade, to be
held on Saturday, March 3, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Also being honored as Deputy Grand Marshals at this year's
Queens County St. Patrick's Day Parade are Maureen Donachie, Mary Ellen
Murray, Maurice Landers, Ralph Reed, Richard Keane, Mark C. Edwards,
Laura Sporny, Sister Agnes White, C.S.J., and Eileen McDonald; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the 37th Annual Queens County St. Patrick's Day
Parade will honor Kevin O'Brien as Grand Marshal of the parade, Thomas
Flood and Eileen Long-Chelales as Honorary Grand Marshals and Edward
Rice and Paddy McCarthy as Gaels of the Year; and
WHEREAS, All of this year's honorees are fittingly being recognized
for their service in their individual fields to the Irish and Irish-Am-
ericans throughout New York State; and
WHEREAS, Michael Charles Schramm Jr., Editor of the ROCKAWAY POINT
NEWS, the youngest child of Michael Sr. and Noreen Schramm, was born and
raised in the Breezy Point section of Rockaway, Queens, where he contin-
ues to reside; and
WHEREAS, Michael Schramm Jr. attended P.S. 114, J.H.S. 180 and then
Xaverian High School in Brooklyn; from Xaverian High School, he went to
Johnson and Wales University from which he graduated with a Bachelor of
Science degree in Food Service Management and an associate degree in
Culinary Arts; and
WHEREAS, Upon graduation, he worked in the restaurant business as a
Manager for several years at such diverse eateries as the Slaughtered
Lamb Pub and Uno's Chicago Grill, eventually landing at LaGuardia
Airport where he operated four restaurants in Terminal B; and
WHEREAS, From the restaurant business, he went to work at Bisys Insur-
ance Company on Beach 129th Street in Rockaway; and
WHEREAS, Michael's parents, the owners of the ROCKAWAY POINT NEWS,
affectionately called the "Pointer," in Breezy Point were considering
retiring to Florida fulltime and possibly selling the beloved small
newspaper and Michael, sensing that though his father wanted to retire
his mother Noreen wasn't quite ready, conferred with his wife Sheila
about whether she thought they could operate the paper together; and
WHEREAS, Sheila Schramm was supportive of Michael's decision and in
May 2008, Michael started in the newspaper business as an Associate
Editor; the ROCKAWAY POINT NEWS at that time was a weekly paper in the
summer and a monthly paper in the winter; and
WHEREAS, Michael Schramm Jr. noticed that the area of the Cooperative
in which he had grown up had undergone a significant change in residen-
cy, from a mostly summer resident area to a predominately winter resi-
dent area and, sensing that the Point could use a weekly paper, the
"Pointer" became a weekly publication and, together with his mother,
turned it into a must read publication; and
WHEREAS, Also actively involved in his community, Michael Schramm Jr.
is a member of the Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Department, the Msgr.
William F. Burke Knights of Columbus Rockaway Council 2672, the Gray-
beards, and Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 21 Rockaway Beach and
Breezy Point; and
WHEREAS, With Michael Schramm Jr. throughout have been his wife Sheila
Burke Schramm, a New York City school teacher, and their daughter Grace
Rose, both of whom are proud to be part of his life and rejoice in his
many accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, Michael Schramm Jr. truly embodies the spirit and the cher-
ished ideals and values of Irish-Americans of this great State and
nation; it is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individuals
of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention,
they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of the
great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Michael Charles Schramm Jr. upon the occasion of his designation
as a Deputy Grand Marshal of the 37th Annual Queens County St. Patrick's
Day Parade, to be held on March 3, 2012; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Michael Charles Schramm Jr.
