LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the African Center for Community
Empowerment upon the occasion of hosting its Girls and Young Women Pride
Initiative

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the African Center for Community Empowerment upon the occasion of host-
ing its Girls and Young Women Pride Initiative on May 19, 2012, in St.
Albans, Queens; and
WHEREAS, The mission of the African Center for Community Empowerment
(ACCE) is to enable and develop at-risk inner-city youth to become
wholesome, functioning and productive members of society; it is also to
train and provide the tools necessary for low income teens and young
adult parents to help themselves and their children by becoming respon-
sible adults and better parents; and
WHEREAS, ACCE serves as a resource center for social, economic and
cultural revival and empowerment for low income, inner-city communities;
it also seeks to establish and support self-help projects, and mobilize
minor relief assistance to war-torn communities in Africa with emphasis
on the youth; and
WHEREAS, ACCE is working diligently on a prevention and counteractive
initiative geared to build self-esteem in girls and young women; its aim
is to prevent these individuals from entering the criminal justice
system and to reduce the rate of female recidivism through effective
programming and services; Providing Resources for Improvement Dignity
and Empowerment (PRIDE) helps to support and encourage social skills,
healthy relationships, creative arts, mentoring, leadership, and job
readiness, through educational enrichment; and
WHEREAS, The project is designed to guide and assist girls and young
women to discover their individual identity and to become aware of their
gifts, talents, and potential; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the African Center for Community Empowerment upon the occasion
of hosting its Girls and Young Women Pride Initiative; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the African Center for Community Empowerment.
