LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Sheila Friedland upon the occasion of
her designation for special recognition by the Westchester Jewish Coun-
cil

WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, Sheila Friedland, of White Plains, New York, has given not
only of her time and energies but also of her competence, intelligence
and leadership and consequently has been designated for special honor;
and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Sheila Fried-
land upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by the
Westchester Jewish Council to be celebrated at its 35th Anniversary Gala
at Congregation Kol Ami in White Plains, New York, on Saturday, February
12, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Serving on the staff of the Jewish Museum in New York from
1982 to 1994, Sheila Friedland's work in the education department
included helping to create family programming, a children's activity
room, programs for day school students, summer institutes for Jewish
educators, and award winning programs for public and private school
students; and
WHEREAS, Sheila Friedland served as Executive Director of Westchester
Jewish Conference (WJC) from 1996 to 2003; under her luminous direction
the organization became a vital player in enriching and strengthening
Jewish life in Westchester; and
WHEREAS, During Sheila Friedland's years leading WJC, synagogues of
all denominations were encouraged to work together and with other organ-
izations on collaborative programming and marketing, information shar-
ing, and responding to local and communal issues; and
WHEREAS, Sheila Friedland has been called upon to contribute her time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Sheila Friedland is particularly proud of her work with
Project Kesher, a Jewish women's organization and one of the fastest
growing social activist organizations in several countries of the former
Soviet Union; and
WHEREAS, Sheila Friedland has been a devoted member of Temple Israel
Center for more than 35 years; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Sheila Friedland has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her loving husband, Bob, their
three wonderful sons and their six adoring grandchildren, all of whom
feel privileged to be a part of her life and rejoice in her achieve-
ments; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend individ-
uals of outstanding character, who have shown initiative and commitment
toward constantly pursuing higher goals for themselves, and acting as
role models of leadership to be emulated by both peers and young people;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Sheila Friedland; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sheila Friedland, White Plains, New York.
