LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Michael T. Famiglietti upon the occasion
of his designation for special recognition by the YMCA of Long Island

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Michael T. Famiglietti has given not only of his time and
energies but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and
consequently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Michael T.
Famiglietti upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition
by the YMCA of Long Island, to be celebrated at its Annual Golf Classic
on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at the Huntington Crescent Club in Hunting-
ton, New York; and
WHEREAS, After a 36-year YMCA career of accomplishment and
distinction, Michael Famiglietti will retire from the YMCA of Long
Island; and
WHEREAS, Michael Famiglietti has served as President and CEO of the
organization for the past 20 years; he began his career as a youth
director for the YMCA at Glen Cove in 1976 and was appointed Executive
Director of the branch in 1978 where, at the age of 28 years old, he was
the youngest director of a full facility YMCA in the country; and
WHEREAS, In 1984, Michael Famiglietti was recruited by the YMCA of
Greater New York to focus on distressed YMCAs in Brooklyn, Staten
Island, and Manhattan; and
WHEREAS, After successfully instituting a detailed plan of fund rais-
ing and board development along with strategic management initiatives,
the facilities became thriving, vibrant, state-of-the-art, successful
community centers; and
WHEREAS, Michael Famiglietti returned to Long Island in 1989, as the
Chief Operating Officer of the YMCA of Long Island and was appointed
President and CEO in 1992; and
WHEREAS, Under his luminous leadership, the YMCA of Long Island has
grown into a highly respected not-for-profit service provider that
employs 1,500 people throughout Long Island and has a presence in 38
different communities; and
WHEREAS, Michael Famiglietti and the YMCA of Long Island have received
recognition and numerous awards for financial management, fund raising,
board development, and new program implementation; and
WHEREAS, Michael Famiglietti developed and instituted a swim program
partnership between school districts and the YMCA where 3rd graders are
offered swimming lessons as part of their physical education curriculum;
this program originated at the Glen Cove YMCA and is now being offered
in most YMCAs in the United States; and
WHEREAS, In honor of his tireless commitment to the YMCA of Long
Island, it has established the Michael T. Famiglietti Scholarship Fund,
an annual scholarship fund that will be awarded to a high school senior
who has demonstrated exemplary community service, with a priority empha-
sis on special needs youth; and
WHEREAS, Michael Famiglietti is a graduate of Seton Hall University
and of the Springfield College and Columbia University Not-For-Profit
Management institutes; and
WHEREAS, A three sport athlete at North Shore High School, Michael
Famiglietti was a starting outfielder on the nationally ranked Seton
Hall University baseball team playing in the 1971 College World Series,
and a member of the World Champion County Sports Softball team; and

WHEREAS, Michael Famiglietti is an inaugural member of the North Shore
High School Hall of Fame, the Glen Cove Hall of Fame, and the New York
State Softball Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Michael T. Famiglietti has been called upon to contribute his
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, A three-term Councilman for the City of Glen Cove, Michael
Famiglietti has been a member of the Lions and Rotary Clubs in the vari-
ous communities that he has served and is a former Lector and Eucharist
Minister for the Diocese of Rockville Center; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Michael T. Famiglietti has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Linda, and their
daughter, Emily, both of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life
and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Michael T. Famiglietti has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Michael T. Famiglietti upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by the YMCA of Long Island; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Michael T. Famiglietti.
