LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Wantagh Public Library upon the
occasion of celebrating its 50th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across the great State
of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi-
zenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Wantagh Public Library upon the occasion of celebrating its 50th
Anniversary, to be observed at a celebration on Saturday, May 12, 2012;
and
WHEREAS, Established by a vote of district residents in February 1962,
the Wantagh Public Library is a school district library serving approxi-
mately 18,567 residents of the Wantagh Community; and
WHEREAS, The Library first opened in a small rented-store of 2,000
square feet at 3366 Park Avenue in December, 1962 with a collection of
3,000 volumes, a staff of three members and many volunteers from the
community, including the Friends of the Wantagh Library, who were very
active gaining support for establishing a library within the Wantagh
community; and
WHEREAS, In March of 1967, the Wantagh community approved the purchase
of the library's present site and constructed a new library building;
and
WHEREAS, The Library Board of Trustees engaged the services of archi-
tect Henry J. Stojowski of Lattingtown, Long Island, who designed a
16,000 square foot library; the building was completed and occupied in
December 1970; and
WHEREAS, The Wantagh Public Library features a unique center core
split-level, multi-tier book stack; the administrative area of the
library was expanded by 900 feet in 1988; and
WHEREAS, The mission of the Wantagh Public Library is to provide mate-
rials and services to community residents to meet their informational,
educational and recreational needs; and
WHEREAS, Special emphasis is placed on supporting students at all
academic levels and on stimulating young children's interest and appre-
ciation for reading and learning; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Wantagh
Public Library may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as it looks
forward to continuing to serve the educational, cultural and intellectu-
al needs of the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Wantagh Public Library upon the occasion of celebrating its
50th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Wantagh Public Library.
