LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the winners of the 2011-2012 Long Island
Philharmonic Young Artist Competition for Piano
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and leaders
of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best exemplify the ideals
and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
winners of the 2011-2012 Long Island Philharmonic Young Artist Competi-
tion for Piano; the competition was held on Monday, April 2, 2012, at
Steinway Piano Gallery in Melville, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Long Island Philharmonic's Young Artist Competition is an
integral part of the Orchestra's commitment to Arts-In-Education; and
WHEREAS, The competition offers aspiring young Long Island musicians
an opportunity to achieve the recognition of their peers, the public,
and the distinguished panel of judges; and
WHEREAS, Mark Fishman, an 11th grade student at Great Neck South High
School, was awarded first prize, earning him the Christopher Keene Memo-
rial Scholarship; he also performed with the Orchestra at the
Philharmonic's 33rd Annual Gala at Oheka Castle on May 3, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Second prize, the Vincent S. Rossitto Memorial Award was
awarded to Maxim Lando, a fourth-grader at John F. Kennedy Elementary
School in Great Neck, New York; and
WHEREAS, Third prize, the Music Director Award, went to David Wu, a
senior at Comsewogue High School in Port Jefferson Station; and
WHEREAS, Honorable mention was given to Alexander Huang, a sophomore
at Carle Place Middle & High School in Carle Place, New York; and
WHEREAS, Each young musician is deserving of his or her own recogni-
tion and spotlight for their remarkable commitment and hours of practice
in perfecting their musical abilities; and
WHEREAS, Music study is most worthy of being encouraged and promoted,
as it provides an opportunity for students to exhibit their skills to an
audience, thereby giving them self-esteem to last a lifetime; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the winners of the 2011-2012 Long Island Philharmonic Young Artist
Competition for Piano; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mark Fishman, Maxim Lando, David Wu, and Alexander Huang.
