LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Dr. Jonathan Lightfoot upon the occa-
sion of his designation as the recipient of a 2012 Educational Advance-
ment Foundation Salute To Excellence in Community Education Award

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that individuals who
distinguish themselves in their profession and in service to their
community and its children merit the highest commendation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Jonathan Lightfoot, of Hofstra University, upon the occasion of his
designation as the recipient of a 2012 Educational Advancement Founda-
tion Salute To Excellence in Community Education Award; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jonathan Lightfoot will be honored at the North Atlantic
Region of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's Cluster III Educational
Advancement Foundation's Breakfast, to be held at the Double Tree by
Hilton in Tarrytown, New York on Saturday, June 23, 2012; and
WHEREAS, The Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF) is dedicated to
the pursuit of lifelong learning and each year proudly recognizes indi-
viduals who have made a difference in non-traditional educational ways
to create an environment in which children can grow; and
WHEREAS, Because of his lifelong commitment to learning, his disci-
plined approach to education, and his community involvement, Dr. Jona-
than Lightfoot truly merits such recognition; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jonathan Lightfoot has made a career of leadership in the
educational field and has simultaneously pursued social justice; he is
currently a tenure track Assistant Professor at Hofstra University where
he has taught, amongst other courses, Foundation Courses in Education,
Leadership and Policy Studies, and Literacy and Leadership, as well as
Race, Ethnicity, Class and Gender in American Education; and
WHEREAS, His primary focus has always been on issues pertaining to
people of color, supporting and being a role model for adolescent males,
and addressing issues pertaining to the impact of educational social
construction on achievement; and
WHEREAS, Prior to joining Hofstra, Dr. Lightfoot taught at the second-
ary, community college, and university levels, addressing many of the
same social justice and educational issues; to a significant extent he
has always focused on race, ethnicity and gender in American Education,
teaching and learning in a diverse world, and adolescent development;
and
WHEREAS, His formal educational role has been coupled with Disserta-
tion Chairperson Work within his Department, work on the Hofstra Senate,
where he has sought to increase inclusiveness, and a host of volunteer
and consulting work in his local community; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lightfoot received the 2008-2009 Professor of the Year
Award from Hofstra's Collegiate Women of Color for his work at Hofstra
and he has supported Pi Phi Omega's health initiative, the Annual Lupus
Walk; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, it is appropriate to publicly proclaim and commend them for the
edification and emulation of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Jonathan Lightfoot upon the occasion of his designation as the
recipient of a 2012 Educational Advancement Foundation Salute To Excel-
lence in Community Education Award on June 23, 2012; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Jonathan Lightfoot.
