LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Brooklyn's Mill Basin Kosher Deli-
catessen on winning the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS' 2011 Best of New York
Pastrami Contest

WHEREAS, Within each community of the great City and State of New York
there are certain places which serve to define the nature of the commu-
nity and the people who live and work there; and
WHEREAS, Such is true of the Mill Basin Deli, fabled eating establish-
ment and landmark restaurant which is a Brooklyn institution and dining
tradition; and
WHEREAS, In full accord with its time-honored traditions, this Legis-
lative Body is justly proud to honor Mill Basin Deli, and its owner Mark
Schachner, upon the occasion of the deli's pastrami sandwich being voted
Best of New York by NEW YORK DAILY NEWS readers for 2011; and
WHEREAS, Now celebrating its 37th Anniversary, Mark Schachner has
owned the Mill Basin Deli, located at 5823 Avenue T, for all those 37
years and his enormous pastrami sandwich has drawn many a follower; and
WHEREAS, The sandwich is prepared with a secret rub; Mark Schachner
says the magic of the sandwich is in that rub, the ingredients of which
only he and his loyal workers know, and in the fact that he steams his
pastrami every morning not once but twice, leaving the meat juicy and
eliminating the fat; and
WHEREAS, The Mill Basin Deli is popular not just as a feast for the
stomach but also for the eyes, thanks to paintings by world-renowned
artists, such as Roy Lichtenstein and Marc Chagall, which Mark Schachner
has hung on its walls over the years; and
WHEREAS, Though he has sold some works off the deli's walls, he now
runs his art business through a nearby gallery, but continues to display
beautiful artwork in the deli's dining room; and
WHEREAS, When he had the opportunity, Mark Schachner expanded the
Avenue T deli into an adjacent storefront and he began making deliveries
in the Pastrami Taxi when he bought a car through the Cash for Clunkers
program and decorated with sandwich decals; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges the success and acclaim of this exceptional restaurant and recog-
nizes its many contributions to the Brooklyn community and economy; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Brooklyn's Mill Basin Kosher Delicatessen on winning the
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS' 2011 Best of New York Pastrami Contest, fully
confident that in the future it will continue to enjoy the same success
and spirit which have characterized its past; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mark Schachner, Mill Basin Deli, 5823 Avenue T, Brooklyn, New
York 11224.
