LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Nicholas Zingaro upon the occasion of
his retirement after 58 years of dedicated service to the New York State
Department of Transportation
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with its
traditions, to honor and recognize those invaluable individuals, who
have worked diligently to enhance the quality of life and safety in our
communities across this great Empire State, committing themselves to the
maintenance of high standards in their profession; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Nicholas Zingaro upon the occasion of his retirement after 58 years of
skilled and dedicated service to the New York State Department of Trans-
portation in Syracuse, and to recognize his many accomplishments and
contributions; and
WHEREAS, Nicholas Zingaro joined the New York State Department of
Transportation, Region 3, as a Senior Engineering Technician in July of
1950, working to complete dozens of important road projects, such as the
original Carrier Circle; and
WHEREAS, In 1972, Nicholas Zingaro left the New York State Department
of Transportation to assume the position of a United States Marine
recruiter, and upon his return to Syracuse in 1980, he was put in charge
of the New York State Department of Transportation's Record Plans Opera-
tion; and
WHEREAS, Nicholas Zingaro was instrumental in the success and safety
of numerous public works and improvement transportation projects during
his tenure with the New York State Department of Transportation, partic-
ipating in all phases of construction; he surveyed sites, designed
plans, and thoroughly inspected the progress of projects; and
WHEREAS, As head of the New York State Department of Transportation's
Record Plans Operation, Nicholas Zingaro consistently provided valuable
research and information to engineers, and provided detailed evidence in
court cases involving state transportation projects; and
WHEREAS, After more than five decades on the job, Nicholas Zingaro
officially retired from the New York State Department of Transportation
on December 31, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Nicholas Zingaro's impact on society stretches far beyond the
New York State Department of Transportation; he honorably served his
country for more than 35 years in the United States Marine Corps, tran-
scending World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam; he was promoted to
Sergeant Major in 1970; and in 2004, he was inducted into the New York
State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Nicholas Zingaro has served his community by participating in
countless community organizations, such as Toys for Tots, the Old News
Boys, the American Legion and the VFW; and he often can be found at
various hospitals throughout Central New York, visiting and supporting
fellow veterans and friends; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout his accomplished life has been his
supportive family, including his beloved late wife, Christina, his five
children, Karen Ann Baracco, Richard, Michael, Nicholas, and Lewis; and
his 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren with one on the way;
and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life and safety in their communities, and have
shown a long and sustained commitment to the maintenance of high stand-
ards in their profession, certainly have earned the recognition and
applause of all citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause to honor Nicholas Zingaro
upon the occasion of his retirement after 58 years of dedicated service
to the New York State Department of Transportation, Region 3; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Nicholas Zingaro.
