LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski for his lifetime
of dedicated outreach, support and contributions to the community
WHEREAS,  It  is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those distinguished citizens who devote their time and  ener-
gies  to the service of their community and profession, participating in
civic affairs and enhancing the character and quality of  life  for  all
citizens; and
  WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor  Dr.
Joseph  F. Karpinski for his lifetime of dedicated outreach, support and
contributions to the community; and
  WHEREAS, Retired from the practice of dentistry and medicine  in  1997
after 45 years as one of the foremost oral and maxillofacial surgeons in
New York State, during his career Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski had offices in
Auburn, Geneva and Ithaca, New York; and
  WHEREAS,  One of five brothers born in Auburn, New York, Dr. Joseph F.
Karpinski graduated from East High School in Auburn in 1942; he enrolled
at Boston College for pre-professional  studies  but  his  studies  were
interrupted by active service in the United States Army during World War
II; and
  WHEREAS,  While  in  the  Army,  Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski completed his
pre-professional studies at Cornell University and began his studies  in
dentistry  at  Creighton  University; he also attended the University of
Minnesota and the Western Reserve Dental School; he received his  Doctor
of  Dental  Surgery degree from the Indiana University School of Dentis-
try; and
  WHEREAS, Subsequently, Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski enlisted in the  United
States  Public  Health  Service  and served at United States Coast Guard
bases in Curtis Bay, Maryland, and from Brownsville, Texas, to Key West,
Florida, and up to Savannah, Georgia; and
  WHEREAS, During the Korean War, Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski  was  assigned
as  the  only  United States Public Health Service Officer in the Alaska
area, treating Coast Guard personnel, Eskimos, Indians and  other  Alas-
kans; and
  WHEREAS,  After  his  Korean  War  service,  Dr.  Joseph  F. Karpinski
attended the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylva-
nia for oral and maxillofacial surgery; he also studied  at  the  Jersey
City  Medical  Center, New York University School of Dentistry, Columbia
School of Dentistry and Tufts University Dental School; and
  WHEREAS, A Founding Fellow of the International  Association  of  Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski was President of the
American  Society of Psychosomatic Medicine in Dentistry in 1964; he was
President of the New  York  State  Society  of  Oral  and  Maxillofacial
Surgeons  in 1970, and President of the Cayuga County Dental Society; in
1975, he was elected President of the American Association of  Oral  and
Maxillofacial Surgeons; and
  WHEREAS,  In addition, Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski was an active member of
numerous professional societies and authored many essays and  papers  on
oral  and maxillofacial surgery and related topics; in 1964, he became a
Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Hypnosis and in June  2002  he
was  awarded  Diplomate  status on the National Dental Board of Anesthe-
siology; and
  WHEREAS, In November 1993, Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski became  the  second
American  citizen to be knighted and made a member of the Knights of the
Black Madonna at Jasna Gora; in 1982, he was elected Polish-American Man
of the Year for the Finger Lakes, as well as Man  of  the  Year  by  the
National Medical Dental Advocates Association; and
  WHEREAS,  Among  his  extensive  community  activities,  Dr. Joseph F.
Karpinski served as Commissioner of  the  Auburn  Housing  Authority,  a
member  of  the  Board  of Directors and Advisory Board of Fleet Bank, a
member of the Board of Trustees of Cayuga Community College  and  Presi-
dent  of  the  Cayuga  County  College Foundation; he also served on the
Board of Trustees of both Alliance College and  the  University  of  New
England; and
  WHEREAS,  In  1975,  Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski was awarded distinguished
alumnus honors from the Indiana University School of Dentistry; and
  WHEREAS, Married to the late Floryanna (Honey) Lesczynska, Dr.  Joseph
F.    Karpinski is the father of three sons and three daughters; and has
11 grandchildren and 20 nephews and nieces;  he  is  a  communicant  and
active member of St. Hyacinth's Catholic Church; and
  WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his professional and communi-
ty  service, a period of constructive involvement, Dr. Joseph F. Karpin-
ski has stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
  WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the  benefit  of  others  which  Dr.  Joseph  F.  Karpinski  has
displayed throughout his life; and
  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  sense  of  this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the-well being and vitality of their profession  and  community,
and  have shown a long and sustained commitment to excellence, certainly
have earned the recognition and applause of all citizens of  this  great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski for his lifetime  of  dedicated  outreach,
support and contributions to the community; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski.
