of recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site on May 30, 2012, and
commemorating the resilient spirit of all the men and women who helped
New York overcome great adversity
WHEREAS, On September 11, 2001, the very principles of American freedom,
and the safety and security of every American at home and abroad were
challenged by the unspeakable atrocities committed on that day; and
WHEREAS, This quickly unfolding personal and national tragedy took the
lives of thousands yet, at the same time, led to an outpouring of self-
less personal heroism by numerous firefighters, police officers, medical
and rescue personnel, and many other individuals, demonstrating the
compassion, determination, and love of freedom which are the embodiment
of the spirit of every New Yorker and every American; and
WHEREAS, These valiant men and women rushed to the aid of their fellow
New Yorkers without regard for their own safety, aptly demonstrating the
character and initiative which personify the highest ideals eternally
apparent in the citizens of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, A decade later, New York's resilience is clearly evident;
together, adversity has been overcome, with many buildings replacing the
dismal rubble and the Big Apple thriving once again with businesses,
people, and the activity and action for which the City of New York is
known around the world; and
WHEREAS, The power of human compassion and the strength of the Ameri-
can spirit were revealed time and time again as we learned of the
outpouring of service and concern the City and State of New York, and
our great country, experienced on September 11th and in its aftermath;
and
WHEREAS, The spirit and compassionate heroism of America was evident
in the actions of every individual who responded during that difficult
time for our nation; and
WHEREAS, The events of 9/11 continue to inspire New Yorkers to perform
acts of heroism and civic duty; and
WHEREAS, May 30, 2002, marked the end of the rescue and recovery oper-
ation at the former World Trade Center site; thousands of New Yorkers
worked or volunteered during the days and months leading up to that day;
and
WHEREAS, On the 10th Anniversary of the completion of recovery efforts
at the World Trade Center site, it is appropriate to pause to once again
express how grateful we continue to be for their service to the people
of the City and State of New York; and
WHEREAS, With deep respect and great admiration, this Legislative Body
is moved to inscribe upon its book of records this tribute to all those
who helped in the recovery efforts at the World Trade Center, that
future generations may know and appreciate their commitment and courage
in the face of unknown danger, and the respect and esteem with which
they will forever be remembered; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
thank and commend all those who assisted in the recovery efforts follow-
