LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Scott
Family Dairy Farm in Masonville, New York

WHEREAS, The agricultural industry is part of the foundation upon which
our distinct American heritage is built; New York State and the entire
United States are dependent on our agricultural industry for a variety
of food products; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
milestones of those families which substantially contribute to the
economic vitality of their communities and the entire Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Scott Family Dairy Farm in Mason-
ville, New York; and
WHEREAS, For 100 years, the Scott Family has operated a dairy farm on
County Route 35 in Masonville; the farm has expanded over the years to
keep up with current farming trends and to remain viable; and
WHEREAS, The original farmstead was purchased by Harold Clifford Scott
and his wife, Orlina Brown Scott on March 10, 1910; they had six chil-
dren, Vera, Harry, Alice, Hattie, Lottie, and Lewis; and
WHEREAS, The original barn held 40 cows, and in the summer of 1923,
Harold Scott became ill with pneumonia and never fully recovered; his
eldest son Harry left school at age 16 and took over the day-to-day
operations of the farm; Harry continued to manage the farm throughout
his life and even though he never completed high school, he made sure
that all of his siblings did; and
WHEREAS, Harry Scott married Marion Williams on October 10, 1939, and
had five children, Harold Irving, Keith, Wally, Gary, and Bruce Scott;
Harry worked over the years to expand the farm, significantly increasing
the farm's acreage; and
WHEREAS, Harry Scott's oldest son, Harold, married Anne Lakin on June
23, 1962, and they took over the farm after Harry's death in March of
1970; Harold increased the herd size from 40-55 in the 1970s; in 1979,
two 40-foot upright silos were constructed and in 1980, a new conven-
tional tie stall barn was built; and
WHEREAS, The milking herd was increased to 60 cows and the old barn
was used to raise heifers and calves; over the years there was vast
expansion, and today, the milking herd numbers are 126 along with a
rolling herd average of 23,369 pounds of milk per cow per year; and
WHEREAS, The Scott Family owns 300 acres in Masonville, but also use
land from six other former Masonville dairy farms to feed and support
their herd; they raise approximately 10 acres of corn silage along with
hay, alfalfa and other forages; and
WHEREAS, Harold and Anne Scott continue to operate the farm today with
the help of their sons, Clifford and Dwayne and their families; on
Wednesday, June 2, 2010, the Scott Family was recognized by the Mason-
ville Town Board; and
WHEREAS, The Scott Family Dairy Farm continues to change and expand
with the times, and is poised for success for many years to come; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges the success of this exceptional family and its contributions to
the local and State economies, fully confident that it will continue to
enjoy the sparkling successes it has experienced thus far; now, there-
fore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Scott Family Dairy Farm in
Masonville, New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Scott Family.
