LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Roy A. Jordan, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Roy A. Jordan, retired Verizon District Manager, of East
Amherst, New York died on November 24, 2010, at the age of 81; and
WHEREAS, Buffalo native Roy A. Jordan, attended Seneca Vocational High
School; he worked as a coal passer on Great Lakes freighters before
enlisting in the United States Army in 1948; he was trained in the
Signal Corps and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan; he was honorably
discharged in 1952; and
WHEREAS, Roy A. Jordan distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, Roy A. Jordan began work at Verizon as a janitor and received
various promotions over the years to lineman, then cable splicer and
later technician; he attended Buffalo State College at night to earn a
bachelor's degree and eventually was promoted to District Manager,
responsible for all outdoor telephone lines and equipment throughout the
716 area code; and
WHEREAS, Driven and hardworking, Roy A. Jordan retired from Verizon in
1991, remarkably, never missing a day of work during his 39 year career,
a distinction of which he was most proud; and
WHEREAS, From 1992 to 1994, Roy A. Jordan lived in Bangkok organizing
the installation of a million new phone lines in Thailand for Telecom
Asia; and
WHEREAS, Roy A. Jordan's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Proudly serving on the board of directors for the Buffalo
Yacht Club for four decades, Roy A. Jordan also served as Commodore of
the club in 1998; in 2001, he was appointed Ship's Husband, the club's
highest honor, recognizing his years of dedication and service; and
WHEREAS, A true lover of boating, Roy A. Jordan along with his family,
spent many summers living on the boat, which was docked at his beloved
Buffalo Yacht Club; and
WHEREAS, Roy A. Jordan and his wife of 49 years, Dorothy Becker
Jordan, sailed the Caribbean and toured Europe, Australia and other
parts of the world in retirement until Mrs. Jordan's death in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Roy A. Jordan is predeceased by his parents, George and Grace
Jordan, his brothers, Gene, George Jr., James, Gerry and Russell, and
his loving wife Dorothy; he is survived by two daughters, Dawn and
Grace, and two sons and their wives, Roy Jr. and Patricia, and Michael
and Elizabeth, as well as 11 grandchildren, Ariana, Brendan, Kelly,
Meghan, Katie, Dan, Jason, Jacquelyn, Shawn, Eric and Rebecca; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Roy A. Jordan leaves
behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will
remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Roy A. Jordan, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Roy A. Jordan.
