LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of WCGR Radio,
104.5 FM

WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in this great Empire State is
indelibly enriched by the faithful and untiring efforts of those radio
stations which have helped shape the history of broadcasting in their
area; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of WCGR Radio, 104.5 FM, to be celebrated on
Tuesday, April 5, 2011; and
WHEREAS, It was on April 5, 1961, that WCGR signed on for the first
time on 1550 AM providing local radio service to Canandaigua and much of
Ontario County; WCGR was founded by Canandaigua native Wes Kimble; and
WHEREAS, The original studios were located at 41 S. Main St., on the
second floor above what was then Elliot's Appliances; WCGR was operated
by Wes Kimble until his untimely death in 1968 at the age of 40; and
WHEREAS, Wes Kimble's twin sons, George and Russell Kimble, took over
operation of the station; George continues to be associated with WCGR as
one of the partners of the Finger Lakes Radio Group, the current owner
of WCGR; and
WHEREAS, In 1971, WCGR moved to its current location on the Canandaig-
ua Hopewell Townline Road; in 2009, it expanded to the FM band, now
broadcasting 24 hours a day on 104.5 MHz; and
WHEREAS, After 50 years, WCGR continues to provide radio listeners
with local news, Canandaigua Braves football, basketball and lacrosse,
as well as extensive community service to the many businesses and organ-
izations in the area; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body would like to extend its highest
commendation to WCGR in recognition of its history of achievement, inno-
vation and service to its community and the State of New York; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of WCGR Radio, 104.5 FM; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to George Kimble and WCGR Radio.
