LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Long
Beach Police Department

WHEREAS, The quality and sanctity of community life are cherished
values, worthy of safeguarding; this Legislative Body is moved to honor
those who preserve and protect such values, lauding particularly their
unwavering courage and dedication in the daily performance of their
duties; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Long Beach Police Department upon the occasion of its 100th Anniversary,
a truly auspicious milestone which will be observed on May 30, 2011,
following the Long Beach Veterans Memorial Day Parade, an annual commu-
nity event in which the participation of the Long Beach Police Depart-
ment is one of its finest traditions; and
WHEREAS, The City of Long Beach, New York, a community of more than
35,000 residents in Nassau County, has been most ably served by the Long
Beach Police Department since its establishment in 1911, even before
Long Beach was chartered as a City in 1922; and
WHEREAS, During the time when horseback riding was commonplace and
fashionable, the Long Beach Police Department had an outstanding Mounted
Unit; the Department's Motorcycle Unit has also been an integral part of
the history of the LBPD; disbanded in the early 1960s, it was revived in
2005 and is used for traffic enforcement and ceremonial details and
history was made in 2008 when a Marine Unit was for the first time
created for the Long Beach Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Since 1911 the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) has been
one of the finest continuing law enforcement agencies in Nassau County;
it is a modern, professional, full service Department dedicated to
providing intelligent, sincere, efficient and courteous service to the
citizens of Long Beach through the use of community policing and working
in partnership with citizens to serve the needs of the community; and
WHEREAS, The Long Beach Police Department is a diversified force; in
addition to the Uniformed Patrol Force, the Department has the following
specialized units: Detective Division, Narcotics Task Force, Street
Crimes Unit, Traffic Division, Motorcycle Unit and Identification Divi-
sion as well as an active cadre of dedicated civilian employees who
provide support and special services such as Clerical Staff, Parking
Enforcement and School Crossings; and
WHEREAS, During the summer, Long Beach Police Department's busiest
months, Special Officers are recruited from Criminal Justice Programs at
local colleges to assist with crowd control and enforcement at the Ocean
Beach Park and other areas and the Department actively employs Bicycle
Patrols on the Boardwalk and in the West End and Four Wheel Drive vehi-
cles patrol on the beach; and
WHEREAS, Today as the Long Beach Police Department observes the mile-
stone of its 100th Anniversary, the men and women of the Long Beach
Police Department remain committed to providing the highest level of
professional service to all residents and visitors to their beautiful
City by the Sea; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have the opportunity, on
this auspicious occasion, to recognize and commend the Long Beach Police
Department, its leaders, officers and members, past and present,
applauding and honoring them for the integrity, professionalism and
exemplary public service which are the hallmark and enduring tradition
of the LBPD; and

WHEREAS, At this time of celebration it is also important to note that
this great achievement has been accomplished as a result of the great
sacrifice, resolve and dedication of all the members of the Long Beach
Police Department, not only its current officers and members, but also
those that have gone before, those that have been relentless in their
service and sacrifice, those that have upheld the tradition of the Long
Beach Police Department and to acknowledge and applaud the service of
each and every one of them; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Long Beach Police Department,
paying tribute to the Department for a century of selfless dedication,
devotion and commitment of the highest caliber in providing service,
public safety and law enforcement to the residents and visitors of the
City of Long Beach, the County of Nassau and the State of New York; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Long Beach Police Department, Long Beach, New York.
