LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Penn South
Social Services, Inc. and the Penn South Program for Seniors

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those facilities which provide essential care and supportive
services for the elderly and those in need, and serve to enhance the
quality of life for our loved ones; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 25th Anniversary of Penn South Social Services, Inc. and the
Penn South Program for Seniors; and
WHEREAS, The year 2011 marks the 25th Anniversary of the formation of
Penn South Social Services, Inc. and the Penn South Program for Seniors;
and
WHEREAS, Penn South Social Services, Inc. is an independent organiza-
tion founded by leaders of the Penn South Co-Operative development in
order to sponsor social service programs for residents; and
WHEREAS, Having followed a survey of resident needs, Penn South Social
Services opened the Penn South Program for Seniors with the support of
organizations including the United Jewish Appeal Federation; and
WHEREAS, The Penn South Program for Seniors was the first "naturally
occurring retirement community" (NORC) program in the country; and
WHEREAS, The program's goal is to assist the elderly to age on site
independently while accessing a full range of social services and main-
taining close social relationships with friends and neighbors; and
WHEREAS, The Penn South Program for Seniors offers health and mental
health services, including blood pressure clinics, diabetes and chronic
pain groups, registered nurse assessments, health and mental health
education seminars, assistance with registration for State and Federal
health programs and overall care coordination and case management; and
WHEREAS, Taking an holistic approach to personal wellness, the program
also provides educational and cultural services, including painting,
sculpture, singing and acting classes, neighbor nights, and trips to a
broad range of New York's cultural institutions; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Penn South Social Services, Inc. and
the Penn South Program for Seniors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Penn South Social Services, Inc. and the Penn South Program
for Seniors.
