LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Westchester Jewish Council upon the
occasion of its 35th Anniversary Gala on February 12, 2011

WHEREAS, Throughout more than three decades of humanitarian leadership
and purposeful endeavor, the Westchester Jewish Council has clearly
demonstrated true compassion and commitment which merit the appreciation
and commendation of this Legislative Body and the people of the State of
New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to recognize and
commend the Westchester Jewish Council upon the occasion of its 35th
Anniversary Gala to be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Congre-
gation Kol Ami in White Plains, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Westchester Jewish Council (WJC) is the central coordi-
nating, advisory, and resource body for the Westchester Jewish communi-
ty, representing over 140 Jewish organizations serving nearly 150,000
Jews; and
WHEREAS, As a Jewish community relations organization, the Council
unites Westchester Jewry with the State of Israel, fosters communication
between Jewish organizations, and cultivates and strengthens relations
with other ethnic groups, elected officials and the community at large;
and
WHEREAS, The Westchester Jewish Council's multitude of community
initiatives include the Israel Roundtable which works to increase coun-
tywide consciousness, connections and commitment to Israel for people of
all ages and coordinates the WANI (Westchester Against Nuclear Iran)
program; and
WHEREAS, WJC's "Watchful Westchester" security awareness program helps
provide safety awareness to Westchester synagogues, Jewish schools and
Jewish institutions and is a most welcome Council initiative; and
WHEREAS, WJC's Partner Programs help its member organizations promote
their programs as does the "Rabbi and the Judge" radio program, heard
most Monday's from 1:00-2:00pm on WVOX 1460AM, during which Rabbi Amiel
Wohl, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Israel of New Rochelle and The Honorable
Samuel G. Fredman, retired New York State Supreme Court Justice, discuss
the latest issues of concern to and from the Westchester Jewish communi-
ty and often welcome special guests and community organization represen-
tatives to the program; and
WHEREAS, Its Westchester Adult Jewish Education Program (WAJE)
provides adult learners with quality adult education programs throughout
Westchester County; courses in a wide variety of subjects are offered on
a trimester basis and are taught by local rabbis and educators; and
WHEREAS, The Westchester Jewish Council is, in addition, deeply
involved in interfaith initiatives and collaborations with other West-
chester faith-based organizations in order to foster understanding and
respect among different faith communities and to combat bigotry, extrem-
ism and violence; and
WHEREAS, Among WJC's most popular, well-received and respected commu-
nity initiatives is its presentation each year at the Council's Annual
Meeting of Julian Y. Bernstein Distinguished Service Awards, named in
honor of the late Julian Y. Bernstein whose dedication to community
remains an inspiration to all, to 18 volunteers from among the Council's
member organizations whose dedication strengthens the Westchester Jewish
community; and
WHEREAS, The Westchester Jewish Council strives to meet the spiritual
and worldly needs of the Westchester community and fulfills its respon-
sibilities with spirit and determination, providing leadership and
contributing, with great success, to many endeavors each year; and

WHEREAS, This year, in keeping with this enduring spirit and commit-
ment, members of the community and WJC supporters will gather at the
Westchester Jewish Council's 35th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, February
12, 2011, to celebrate the vibrancy of the Westchester Jewish Council
and to recognize the accomplishments of the Council and members of the
community; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing the strength of its commitment and the benefit of
its service, this Legislative Body proudly extends its highest commenda-
tion to the Westchester Jewish Council, noting its preeminent endeavors
and outstanding leadership; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor and commend the Westchester Jewish Council upon the occasion of
its 35th Anniversary Gala; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Westchester Jewish Council.
