LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Jerry Mavros for 50 years of distin-
guished service to the Oyster Bay Lions Club

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and character
who have inspired and brought pride to our majestic Empire State with
their strong contributions to the community and model citizenship; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions; this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Jerry Mavros for 50 years of distinguished service to the Oyster Bay
Lions Club, to be celebrated on Sunday, April 28, 2013, on Centre
Island, New York; and
WHEREAS, This special event is also the Oyster Bay Lions Club's Eighth
Annual Spring Benefit which will support Guide Dogs for the Blind -
America's VetDogs along with other worthy causes; and
WHEREAS, Lion Jerry Mavros has been an exemplary member of the Oyster
Bay Lions Club for the past 50 years; born and raised in Oyster Bay, New
York, he grew up in the family restaurant business with his father; and
WHEREAS, In 1951, Jerry Mavros was drafted during the Korean War where
he proudly served his country in Germany as a Morse Code Operator for
the United States Army; this marked the first time that he had ever
ventured off Long Island; and
WHEREAS, Upon his return, Jerry Mavros married his high school sweeth-
eart, Stella, in June of 1953; and
WHEREAS, Upon his father's retirement from "The Oyster Bay Restaurant"
in 1962, the torch was passed on to Jerry Mavros and his brother; the
restaurant remained a familiar local mainstay for the next 24 years
until it was sold in 1988; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Mavros has served his community through the Oyster Bay
Lions Club with passion, humor and the commitment to help those who are
less fortunate; he exemplifies the Lions motto "We Serve"; in addition,
he served as club President from 1970-1971, and is a recipient of the
prestigious Lions Robert J. Uplinger Award; and
WHEREAS, Along with his wife, Stella, with him throughout have been
their three children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren,
all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his
achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Jerry Mavros for 50 years of distinguished service to the Oyster
Bay Lions Club; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Jerry Mavros.
