LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Steven Goodman upon the occasion of
his retirement after nearly 50 years of distinguished service to the
Samuel Field YMCA

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Steven Goodman upon the occasion of his retirement after nearly 50 years
of distinguished service to the Samuel Field YMCA in Little Neck,
Queens, New York; and
WHEREAS, For almost half a century, Dr. Steven Goodman rendered faith-
ful, conscientious and valuable service to the Samuel Field YMCA, work-
ing in numerous roles over the course of his long and productive tenure;
and
WHEREAS, Steven Goodman grew up in Flushing, New York, later moving to
Bayside; he started working at the Samuel Field YMCA as a day camp coun-
selor at the age of 16; and
WHEREAS, With a passion for promoting the comprehensive well-being of
youth and the vulnerable in his community, Steven Goodman graduated from
Queens College with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1968, and
earned his doctoral degree from Columbia's Teachers College in 1977;
throughout, he remained with the Samuel Field YMCA, rising through the
ranks over the years to eventually become its Associate Director in
1991, and then Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer
(CEO) in 1995; and
WHEREAS, In his 18-year capacity as Executive Vice President and CEO,
Dr. Steven Goodman led the Samuel Field YMCA with vision, honor and
distinction; and
WHEREAS, During his illustrious tenure, the organization's budget
nearly tripled; in addition, the Samuel Field YMCA started a variety of
innovative programs for people with limited options for services:
seniors, individuals living with Alzheimer's disease, and children
living with autism and developmental disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Today the Samuel Field YMCA serves more than 30,000 people
per year via in-house activities and at more than 25 off-site programs;
this sparkling agency, due in large measure to the outstanding leader-
ship and skill of Dr. Steven Goodman, provides a wide range of services
to the Queens community including after-school day care, camps, job
training services and physical education; and
WHEREAS, In retirement, Dr. Steven Goodman, who is also an adjunct
professor at C.W. Post in Brookville, New York, looks forward to spend-
ing time with his wife, Sheri, their children, Seth and Rebecca, and
their grandson Jack; he will also continue to serve as a special
consultant to the organization he already served so well; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Steven Goodman upon the occasion of his retirement after near-
ly 50 years of distinguished service to the Samuel Field YMCA; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Steven Goodman.
