LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Patricia Beck upon the occasion of her
retirement after 17 years of dedicated service as Publisher of the LEAD-
ER-HERALD

WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in acknowledging
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of its esteemed
residents; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Beck has announced her retirement after 17 years as
publisher of the LEADER-HERALD, effective March 31, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Pat attended Fulton-Montgomery Community College for secre-
tarial science; and
WHEREAS, She began her long and distinguished career in journalism and
communications in the early 1980s, at local radio stations "WMVQ" and
"WKOL"; and
WHEREAS, Pat was then approached by the then-publisher of the
RECORDER, Charlie Miller, to join the newspaper as a talk-show host as
part of the paper's contract with Time Warner; and
WHEREAS, She worked at the RECORDER for 12 years, and was serving as
advertising director before joining the LEADER-HERALD as advertising
director in 1990; and
WHEREAS, Pat has served as publisher since December 1, 1996; and
WHEREAS, As publisher, she was instrumental in several LEADER-HERALD
events, including the annual Fulton County Spelling Bee, Taste of Home
Cooking School, and Air Force Band shows; and
WHEREAS, Pat is a trailblazer in her field; she was the first presi-
dent of the New York Advertising Executives and one of the first female
presidents of the New York State Publisher's Association, now known as
the New York News Publishers' Association, and still serves on its
board; and
WHEREAS, She has a long and distinguished history of community
service, and has contributed her time to the Montgomery County Chamber
of Commerce, the United Way of Montgomery County, the Foundation of the
Fulton County Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Soroptimist
International Fulton County, St. John's Episcopal Church Vestry,
Gloversville BID, Gloversville Economic Development Corp., Mental Health
Association in Fulton and Montgomery Counties, Family Counseling Center,
Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Fulton-Montgomery Community College Founda-
tion, and Fulton County United Way, of which she is a director emeritus;
and
WHEREAS, Pat has been honored as the Fulton County Executive of the
Year and as Soroptimist Woman of Distinction; and
WHEREAS, She has also received the Founder's Day Award from the
Gloversville Central Council Parent Teacher Association, and the
Juliette Low Women of Distinction award from Mohawk Pathways Council,
Inc.; and
WHEREAS, Pat and her husband, Skip, are the proud parents of two chil-
dren; they have also been blessed with two granddaughters; and
WHEREAS, She has been a tremendous asset to the LEADER-HERALD and an
inspiration to her colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Patricia Beck upon her well-deserved retirement as publisher of
the LEADER-HERALD; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Patricia Beck.
