LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Dr. Philip A. DeFina upon the occasion
of his designation as recipient of the Joseph Saia Lifetime Achievement
Award by the American Legion Kings County Youth Recreational Facility,
Inc.

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Philip A. DeFina has given not only of his time and ener-
gies but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and conse-
quently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Dr. Philip
A. DeFina upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Joseph Saia Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Legion Kings
County Youth Recreational Facility, Inc.; his contributions to the
community will be celebrated at the organization's 20th Annual Baseball
Fundraiser on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Gargiulo's Restaurant, Brooklyn,
New York; and
WHEREAS, The American Legion Kings County Youth Recreational Facility,
Inc. provides and maintains baseball fields for use by neighborhood
youth organizations and schools in Brooklyn, New York, allowing thou-
sands of children to play baseball in a clean and safe environment at no
cost to them or their families; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Philip A. DeFina has generously contributed his time and
talents to advancing the mission of this esteemed organization as a
valued member of its Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Philip DeFina is the founder, Chief Executive Officer,
and Chief Scientific Officer of the International Brain Research Founda-
tion, Inc., (IBRF), where he spearheads collaborations among top neuros-
cientists and research facilities around the world by facilitating and
coordinating cutting-edge research in the field of brain health; and
WHEREAS, IBRF's areas of focus include: traumatic and non-traumatic
brain injury; autism spectrum disorders; conditions of the aging brain,
including dementia, Alzheimer's, and memory disorders; learning and
attentional disorders; developmental brain disorders; and chronic and
progressive neurological/neuropsychological disorders; and
WHEREAS, Due to Dr. Philip Defina's astute leadership, IBRF is able to
harness the talent and resources needed to tackle the complexities of
the brain and provide hope for future cures; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Philip DeFina is a well-known author, lecturer, and
clinician; he was a guest researcher at the National Institutes of
Health, as well as a member of the international neuroscience subcommit-
tee of the World Health Organization; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he has been a pioneer in developing and direct-
ing national clinical training programs in the cognitive neurosciences;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Philip DeFina's invaluable efforts in bringing together
the best research and minds available in the ever-changing area of brain
health serve the best interests of individuals and families across this
State and Nation affected by brain disease, injury, and dysfunction; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his service, a period of
constructive involvement, Dr. Philip DeFina has stood constant in digni-
ty, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Dr. Philip A. DeFina has displayed
throughout his life; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. Philip A. DeFina upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the Joseph Saia Lifetime Achievement Award; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Philip A. DeFina.
