LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION paying tribute to David McLaughlin as he is
honored by the Oyster Bay Lions Club at its 9th Annual Spring Benefit on
April 27, 2014
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to pay tribute to David
McLaughlin as he is honored by the Oyster Bay Lions Club at its 9th
Annual Spring Benefit to be held at the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht
Club, Centre Island, New York, on Sunday, April 27, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Lions Club International is dedicated to being a global lead-
er in both community and humanitarian service, empowering volunteers to
serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and
promote international understanding through Lions clubs; and
WHEREAS, David McLaughlin has been a member of the Oyster Bay Lions
Club since 1986; born in Syosset, he moved to Oyster Bay in 1969 with
his family, and is a graduate of Oyster Bay High School; and
WHEREAS, He attended the University of Rhode Island, earning a Bach-
elor of Science degree in Resource Development; and
WHEREAS, David McLaughlin's career began at the Planting Fields
Arboretum, where he became the head of the greenhouses, while earning an
MBA from Long Island University, C.W. Post campus, and teaching as an
adjunct professor at the State of New York College at Farmingdale; and
WHEREAS, In 1977, David married Genellen McGrath and they lived for
several years in the Historic Walt Whitman House in Huntington; they
moved to Kansas City, Missouri, when David was offered a position as the
Supervisor of Floriculture for the City; their two children, David and
Helen, were born shortly after; and
WHEREAS, In 1984, David's brother, Joe, made him an offer to come back
to Oyster Bay and head up the newly-formed landscape division of Dodds &
Eder; David became a full partner in 1994; and
WHEREAS, Over the last 30 years, David McLaughlin grew the landscape
operation into the award-winning, full-service landscape design and
installation firm it is today; and
WHEREAS, A valued member of his community, Lion Dave McLaughlin's
involvement has included membership, service and leadership in several
area organizations: the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Boys and Girls Club,
where he was President; President of the North Shore Horticultural Soci-
ety; Vice-President of the Waterfront Center; and President of the
Oyster Bay Lions Club (1989-1990 and 2009-2010); and
WHEREAS, David McLaughlin is the proud recipient of the Robert J.
Uplinger Award as well as the Melvin Jones Award; and
WHEREAS, In his spare time, David McLaughlin enjoys reading, fishing,
antiquing, traveling with his wife to visit their children in Virginia
and California, and spending time at their second home in Maine; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which David McLaughlin has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to pay
tribute to David McLaughlin as he is honored by the Oyster Bay Lions
Club at its 9th Annual Spring Benefit on April 27, 2014; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to David McLaughlin.
