LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of William Sweeting, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body mourns the death of William
Sweeting, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and
WHEREAS, William Sweeting, of Manhattan, New York, was called home on
Sunday, March 9, 2014; and
WHEREAS, He was born on January 25, 1945, in Deep Creek, South Andros,
Bahamas; he was the first son of Cubell and Elvera Sweeting, and the
eldest of seven children; and
WHEREAS, William Sweeting served with great distinction in the Royal
Bahamas Police Force from 1963 to 1969; further, he received the presti-
gious "Baton of Honor" award due to his high aptitude; all aspects of
his life would be marked by unstinting service to others; and
WHEREAS, William Sweeting met the love of his life, Mary, and migrated
to New York City to be with her; the couple wed on February 26, 1972,
and remained deeply committed to each other throughout their joyous 42
years of marriage; and
WHEREAS, He was a loving and devoted father to his three children,
rejoicing in their accomplishments, and instilling in them the values of
love, discipline and self-respect; this kindly gentleman also took on
the role of mentor to boys in his community; and
WHEREAS, A hardworking and resourceful provider, William Sweeting
began working as a part-time Betting Clerk at New York City Off Track
Betting Corporation in the 1980s where his prodigious work ethic earned
him many promotions, ultimately serving as Chair of the Finance and
Budget Department; he was soon promoted to Budget Director, a position
he held for over 20 years until his retirement in 2005; and
WHEREAS, William Sweeting's commitment to excellence, and his spirit
of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including char-
itable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Actively involved in community affairs, he served for ten
years as Chairman of Harlem's Community Board 10, and as Chairman of
Esplanade Gardens Building Two Association; in addition, William Sweet-
ing was a member of the NAACP Mid-Manhattan Branch; and
WHEREAS, William Sweeting was a devout Christian and lived his faith
every day of his worthy life; he was a beloved Sunday School teacher at
St. Paul's Native Baptist Church in South Andros for many years; subse-
quent to his emigration to Harlem, he became a well-respected member of
the Church of the Master, where he had the honor of serving as Deacon
and President of the Church's Credit Union; he joined Bethany Baptist
Church in 2005 where he was a member of the Male Chorus, Church Finance
Committee, Chair of the Men's Day Committee, Sunday School teacher and
Trustee; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his son, Glenn Sweeting, William Sweeting is
survived by his wife, Mary, his children, Elizabeth and Machelle, and a
loving community; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, William Sweeting leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of William Sweeting; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of William Sweeting.
