LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Kew Gardens Civic Association upon
the occasion of celebrating its 100th Anniversary on May 1, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals that are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Kew Gardens Civic Association upon the occasion of its 100th Anni-
versary, to be celebrated on Thursday, May 1, 2014; and
WHEREAS, A neighborhood organization which has contributed much to the
progress of its community, the Kew Gardens Civic Association was founded
in March of 1914, at the home of section resident, Mr. Cook; and
WHEREAS, At its inaugural meeting, the Kew Gardens Civic Association
elected its first president, W.C. Cuntz, and first secretary treasurer,
R. Lawrence; and
WHEREAS, Regular meetings were soon held at the Richmond Hill (Union
Hall) Club which would ultimately give way to the Kew Gardens Country
Club; the Kew Gardens Country Club has always generously allowed the
association to hold its meetings on their premises; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to serving its community, the Kew Gardens Civic
Association formed an executive committee and four separate standing
committees; these included: sewer and light, streets and water, trans-
portation, and schools; and
WHEREAS, The first notable achievement of the Kew Gardens Civic Asso-
ciation was placing the Kew Gardens electrical lighting system under-
ground, a difficult project which was solely attributable to the organ-
ization's efforts; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, this esteemed organization has continued to
display a strong commitment to maintaining the beauty and character of
community life in Kew Gardens; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Kew Gardens Civic Association works closely with
local leaders, businesses and developers to preserve the traditions that
make this neighborhood such a wonderful place to live; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when an organ-
ization of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our atten-
tion, it should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Kew Gardens Civic Association upon the occasion of celebrat-
ing its 100th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Kew Gardens Civic Association.
