LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra upon
the occasion of celebrating its 40th Anniversary, March 29, 2014
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those musical institutions that have brought entertainment and
cultural enrichment to the citizens of the great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra upon the occasion of celebrating its
40th Anniversary with a Gala held on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the
Brooklyn Museum of Art; Elliott Forrest, radio host on WQXR-FM, was the
master of ceremonies for this auspicious event; and
WHEREAS, In 1972, a group of Brooklyn Heights residents, business
people, music lovers, and performers met and formed an organization
designed to promote great music, to inspire youth with a love of culture
through music, and to bring enjoyment through music to the entire commu-
nity; and
WHEREAS, With these goals, the Brooklyn Heights Music Society was
incorporated in 1973 and the Brooklyn Heights Orchestra was born; and
WHEREAS, In 2000, the orchestra changed its name to Brooklyn Symphony
Orchestra and today, is a mix of talented amateur, semi-professional,
and professional musicians from all walks of life who play for the sheer
joy of the experience; and
WHEREAS, Under the direction of President John C. Riedel, the Brooklyn
Symphony Orchestra performs concerts of classical, romantic, and 20th
Century works at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, in addition to concerts of
smaller ensembles throughout the borough; and
WHEREAS, In addition to celebrating its 40th Anniversary, the Brooklyn
Symphony Orchestra will mark the beginning of a new partnership with the
Brooklyn Museum of Art; all concerts will now be held in the museum's
Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when insti-
tutions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra upon the occasion of celebrating
its 40th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to President John C. Riedel, Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra.
