LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Superintendent Dr. Michael McGill upon
the occasion of his retirement after many years of distinguished service
as an educator
WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled; its
history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its educa-
tional professionals and the students they inspire; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of those outstanding
educational leaders, whose dedication and achievements have been instru-
mental in developing character and academic excellence in the young
people of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Superintendent Dr. Michael McGill upon the occasion of his retirement
after many years of distinguished service as an educator; this auspi-
cious occasion will be celebrated with a farewell dinner in his honor on
Thursday, June 12, 2014, at the Shenorock Shore Club in Rye, New York;
and
WHEREAS, Educators like Michael McGill provide a tremendous service to
the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of young
people in their educational journeys and ensuring their success in their
future years; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Williams College with a Bachelor of Arts degree
in English, Michael McGill attained his Masters degree in English Educa-
tion, and his Education Doctorate from Harvard University; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man began his career as an English teacher in
Lexington, Massachusetts, where he taught from 1966-1969; he then
accepted a position in New Hampshire as Director of the Anti-Poverty
Program, Project Follow Through, where he served for two years helping
underprivileged children; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Michael McGill then held the position of Headmaster at
Hopkins School before accepting a position as Superintendent of the
North Shore School District, where he served in this capacity for 14
years representing the best interests of students and educators; and
WHEREAS, In 1998, Dr. Michael McGill became Superintendent of Scars-
dale Public Schools, and for the past 16 years, has championed a curric-
ulum emphasizing creative and critical thinking skills at all grade
levels; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Michael McGill's committed leadership has had an
outstanding effect on the quality and character of education in his
district; during his tenure, he instituted a fifth grade capstone
project, added Mandarin courses at the high school, moved from an AP
curriculum to Advanced Track courses, and founded the nationally-recog-
nized Center for Innovation; and
WHEREAS, Respected for his independent views and forward thinking,
this remarkable man has achieved outstanding results for Scarsdale
Public Schools; the district has received a perfect 10 rating on the
national Great Schools website, and 98 percent of students go on to
attend four-year colleges; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of his distinguished service, Dr. Michael
McGill was named New York State Superintendent of the Year in 2006; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Michael McGill has clearly had an enduring impact on the
youth of the Scarsdale Public School District, as well as on the commu-
nity-at-large, and accordingly merits recognition and applause for his
impressive dedication to others; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
public education by providing their skills and talents to our schools;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Superintendent Dr. Michael McGill upon the occasion of his retire-
ment after many years of distinguished service as an educator, and to
wish him continued success in all of his future endeavors; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Superintendent Dr. Michael McGill.
