LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Barbara Shack upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by Champions of Choice, April 30,
2014

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Shack has given not only of her time and energies but
also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special recognition; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Barbara Shack
upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by Cham-
pions of Choice at its Awards Luncheon, held on Wednesday, April 30,
2014, at 583 Park Avenue, New York City; Felicia Taylor, International
Anchor and Correspondent will serve as this year's Emcee; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Shack served as the Chairperson of NARAL Pro-Choice
New York for a decade and has been an active member of the organization
for more than 20 years; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Shack has made it her life's work to protect and
defend the rights of all New Yorkers; she was the Associate Director and
Legislative Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union and was a
co-founder and chairperson of the New York State Coalition for Choice;
and
WHEREAS, Barbara Shack was a founder of New Yorkers Against the Death
Penalty, served on its Board, and chaired its Political Action Commit-
tee; furthermore, she was a founding member of the New York State Task
Force on Life and the Law, on which she served for 30 years; and
WHEREAS, She was appointed to several judicial screening committees
including the New York State Judicial Nomination Committee on Open
Government, was a member of the Department Disciplinary Committee of the
Appellate Division, First Department, of the New York State Supreme
Court, and was a member of the New York State Commission on the Status
of Women; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Shack represented the Women's Bar Association of the
State of New York as its legislative counsel and chaired the Task Force
on Bio-Ethics of the American Jewish Congress; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Shack has been called upon to contribute her time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Barbara Shack has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Barbara Shack has displayed through-
out her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Barbara Shack upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by Champions of Choice; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Barbara Shack.
