LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 161st Anniversary of the Sara-
toga Chip, and recognizing August 24, 2014, as Saratoga Chip Day

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges noteworthy events in America's history which deserve special
recognition such as the creation of the potato chip; and
WHEREAS, This year marks the 161st Anniversary of the Saratoga Chip;
this Legislative Body is justly proud to recognize August 24, 2014, as
the official Saratoga Chip Day, honoring the day the chip was first
created, at a celebration to be held at the Saratoga Race Track, Sarato-
ga Springs, New York; and
WHEREAS, America's first potato chip was created by George Crum, a
cook at Moon's Lake House on Saratoga Lake, in Saratoga Springs, New
York, on August 24, 1853; and
WHEREAS, In 1853, a patron ordered fried potatoes with his meal; he
complained the potatoes were too thick and sent them back to the cook;
upset someone would criticize his cooking, George Crum sliced a new
batch of potatoes paper-thin, fried them to a crisp in boiling oil, and
then salted them; and
WHEREAS, What was intended as a stunt turned into an instant hit; the
fussy patron and his friends loved the "crunch potato slices"; soon the
chips became known as Saratoga Chips; and
WHEREAS, Saratoga Chips, as they were initially known, is the original
potato chip which helped launch a multi-billion dollar a year industry
in the snack food business; and
WHEREAS, Saratoga Chips was reintroduced to the market in 2009 as
"America's First Kettle Chip", and since that time, has grown steadily
in popularity; and
WHEREAS, An industry was launched; today, Americans consume more pota-
to chips than any other people in the world, making potato chips Ameri-
ca's favorite snack; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 161st Anniversary of the Saratoga Chip, and to recognize
August 24, 2014, as Saratoga Chip Day; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Saratoga Chips, LLC.
