LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Shweta and Shilpa Iyer, twin
sisters from Port Jefferson Station, upon the occasion of winning
regional finalist honors in the National Siemens Science Contest

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and leaders
of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best exemplify the ideals
and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Shweta and Shilpa Iyer upon the occasion of winning regional final-
ist honors in the National Siemens Science Contest; and
WHEREAS, Shweta and Shilpa Iyer, 16-year-old twin sisters who are
seniors at Comsewogue High School in Port Jefferson Station, New York,
were at Brookhaven National Laboratory, researching the conversion of
water into hydrogen, when the contest results appeared on the Internet;
and
WHEREAS, Subsequently, these outstanding students each won $1,000,
along with a chance to compete for a top team prize of $100,000; and
WHEREAS, Administered by The College Board and funded by the Siemens
Foundation, the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology is one
of the country's two top competitions for high school researchers; it
recognizes remarkable talent early on, fostering individual growth for
high school students who are willing to challenge themselves through
science research; and
WHEREAS, Through this competition, students have an opportunity to
achieve national recognition for science research projects that they
complete in high school; the Siemens Contest announced a nationwide
total this year of 93 regional finalists and 322 semifinalists, chosen
from 2,255 registered competitors; and
WHEREAS, Educational competitions which serve to better prepare our
students for their future are worthy of praise and support; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose, these
scholars now stand honorably, with just pride in their accomplishments
and in eager anticipation of future challenges, understanding and appre-
ciating the caring counsel and support provided by their teachers and
parents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Shweta and Shilpa Iyer upon the occasion of winning
regional finalist honors in the National Siemens Science Contest; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Shweta and Shilpa Iyer.
