LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring brothers Werner and Hans Lehner upon the
occasion of their designation for special recognition on December 9,
2012

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Werner and Hans Lehner have given not only of their time and
energies but also of their competence, intelligence and leadership and
consequently have been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor brothers
Werner and Hans Lehner upon the occasion of their designation for
special recognition, which was celebrated on Sunday, December 9, 2012;
and
WHEREAS, The owners of Zum Stammtisch restaurant, Werner and Hans
Lehner have been selected for special honor for their outstanding
service to the Glendale community; and
WHEREAS, Zum Stammtisch was founded in November of 1972, by John
Lehner and two other partners; and
WHEREAS, Before immigrating to the United States in the 1950s, John
Lehner was a coppersmith in Freising, Bavaria Germany; his father had a
small bar/restaurant in town and it was always John's dream to open his
own German restaurant; and
WHEREAS, Shortly upon arriving in the United States, John Lehner was
drafted into the United States Army; after honorably serving his country
for two years, he came back to New York and met his future wife Erna;
they were married shortly thereafter and had two children, Werner and
Hans; and
WHEREAS, After much hard work and dedication on behalf of John Lehner
and his partners, Zum Stammtisch became a popular restaurant and a great
meeting point for many local Germans and Europeans; and
WHEREAS, John Lehner's partners were bought out within the first ten
years, and from that point forward, he independently ran the day to day
operations of Zum Stammtisch; and
WHEREAS, John Lehner began training his children, Werner and Hans
Lehner, at a very early age in the art of running a restaurant; and
WHEREAS, Werner and Hans Lehner both worked their way up from the
bottom, earning every job in order to fully understand how a restaurant
really works; and
WHEREAS, In 1993, Werner and Hans Lehner took over Zum Stammtisch and
have been running the business ever since, maintaining the strict stand-
ards set by their father while fusing their own ideas to keep things
authentic and true to the original concept John Lehner brought to this
country so many years ago; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Zum Stammtisch has gained much recognition,
being featured on numerous television shows and written about in various
food magazines and articles; and
WHEREAS, After years of success with Zum Stammtisch, Hans and Werner
decided to expand the Stammtisch name, opening up a German pork store,
located right next to the restaurant; and
WHEREAS, Today, Stammtisch Pork Store & Imports offers authentic
German meats and delicacies that are difficult to find anywhere else;
and
WHEREAS, Werner and Hans Lehner have been called upon to contribute
their time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and
have always given of themselves unstintingly; and

WHEREAS, In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Werner and Hans Lehner went
right to work, providing generous donations of food to those who were
affected by the disaster; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Werner and Hans Lehner have been valued members
of their community through their involvement in the Glendale Kiwanis
club, and always help to bring about the holiday spirit with their
participation in the Glendale Tree Lighting ceremony; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of their community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Werner and Hans Lehner have stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which Werner and Hans Lehner have displayed
throughout their lives; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor brothers Werner and Hans Lehner upon the occasion of their desig-
nation for special recognition on December 9, 2012; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Werner and Hans Lehner.
