LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Adam Zyglis upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial
Cartooning

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious journalistic entities which have diligently and
consistently, year after year, recorded the history of their communities
and brought local news and news of the larger world to their readers;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Adam
Zyglis upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the 2015
Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious award is bestowed upon those who have made
stellar achievements in newspaper and online journalism, literature, and
musical composition in the United States; established in 1917, by
provisions in the will of American (Hungarian-born) publisher Joseph
Pulitzer, it is administered by Columbia University in New York City,
and prizes are awarded yearly in 21 categories; and
WHEREAS, Born in Buffalo, New York, Adam Zyglis graduated Summa Cum
Laude from Canisius College, majoring in Computer Science and minoring
in Math with a concentration in Studio Arts; and
WHEREAS, While a student, Adam Zyglis worked as a Cartoonist for THE
GRIFFIN; for his outstanding work at the school's newspaper, he was
honored by the Associated Collegiate Press and the Universal Press
Syndicate; as a senior at Canisius College, he wrote his honors thesis
on the art of editorial cartooning; and
WHEREAS, Since 2004, Adam Zyglis has held the position of Staff
Cartoonist for the BUFFALO NEWS; today his cartoons are internationally
syndicated and have been published in numerous newspapers around the
world, including THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, USA TODAY, and
LOS ANGELES TIMES; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Adam Zyglis' work has appeared in magazines such
as THE WEEK, TIME, and MAD, and he is a freelance book illustrator;
currently he draws four to five cartoons a week along with a caricature
on the book page and sometimes a cover illustration; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable cartoonist has been the recipient of numerous
awards and accolades including the Clifford K. and James T. Berryman
Award, second place in the John Locher Memorial Award, and was a final-
ist in the Charles M. Schulz Award; in both 2007 and 2011, he took third
place for editorial cartoons in the National Headliner Awards; and
WHEREAS, Our journalists provide a tremendous service to citizens
across the State of New York by keeping them informed about current
events; the democracy of our State and Nation is strengthened by a
responsible citizenry which is actively engaged in reading and kept
abreast of news affecting their lives; and
WHEREAS, As this remarkable member of the press moves into the future,
he carries with him the legacy of a distinguished journalistic history
and an outstanding record of growth and achievement; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Adam Zyglis upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Adam Zyglis.
