LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Cantor Sam Levine upon the occasion of
his designation for special recognition by the East Midwood Jewish
Center on June 14, 2015
WHEREAS, The character and richness of religious and community life in
this noble Empire State is nourished and fulfilled through the faithful
concern and selfless devotion of those who would commit their energies
and purpose to the ministry of others; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to bring full
recognition and just tribute to those individuals who distinguish them-
selves and the ministry through their unremitting commitment and preemi-
nence of service; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Cantor Sam Levine upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the East Midwood Jewish Center at its 91st Annual Journal
Dinner Dance on Sunday, June 14, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Born in Jerusalem, and raised in Toronto, Canada, Sam Levine
spent a decade in the Monterey Bay area of California before moving to
New York; he is a graduate of the H.L. Miller Cantorial School, and the
Seminary College of Jewish Music at the Jewish Theological Seminary of
America; and
WHEREAS, Since 2004, Cantor Sam Levine has made a significant impact
on the East Midwood Jewish Center; he both founded and directed the
Chorus, trained congregants and children to read Torah and Haftorah, and
has taught subjects ranging from beginner Hebrew to Midrash and medieval
commentators; and
WHEREAS, Cantor Sam Levine also leads Shabbat-a-BimBom, a wonderful
program for children, their parents, and grandparents; he was also
instrumental in organizing numerous interfaith activities; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Cantor Sam Levine has served as a representative
from the East Midwood Jewish Center at the UJA Federation Brownstone
Brooklyn Roundtable; in this capacity, he has built bridges to the
Brownstone Brooklyn Jewish Community, forging a lasting partnership with
the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Courtney Walsh, and
their children, Micah and Matan, all of whom feel privileged to be a
part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Cantor Sam Levine has brought to his ministry an overwhelming
spirit of charity and compassion, acting from vision and enlightenment
in conducting his administrative and spiritual duties, while always
displaying the highest standards of personal and professional integrity
and dedication; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished man of God has always given enlightenment,
guidance and wisdom to the many entrusted to his care and has adminis-
tered abundantly and unstintingly to the spiritual and corporal needs of
all; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when a person
of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our attention it is
appropriate to publicly and jubilantly proclaim and commend that indi-
vidual for the edification of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Cantor Sam Levine upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by the East Midwood Jewish Center on June 14, 2015,
noting his unremitting and compassionate faith and his exemplary service
to God, man, and his community, and extending to him the heartfelt best
wishes of this Legislative Body for a future of purposeful success and
well-being; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitable engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Cantor Sam Levine.
